Hi,
My parents have just informed me they want to buy a digital camera,
somewhere in the region of £150-£250 (I'm in the UK). Now, they don't have
a computer, but plan on buying a printer. Would this be ok?
Anyway, they asked my advice because they know absolutely nothing about
digital cameras. Unfortunately neither do I. Basically they would like a
camera which gives very good picture quality, is small, and looks nice.
What sort of specifications should they be looking for?
Is there are cameras which people would like to recommend in that price
range (or slightly more than that price)? Also if you could recommend a
printer for them that would also be great. Oh yes, and any place where we
could purchase these things.
Any advice would be very much appreciated.
Thanks. >> Stay informed about: Looking for a digital camera up to £250 |

If they buy a printer, it must have a slot for their memory card, or can
connect directlty to the camera. Preferbaly, it should be one that lets
them preview each picture and decide whether or not to print it.
A relatively low-cost option is the HP 7260.

Another is the Kodak Easy Share system, with a dock for the camera built
into the printer. You view the picture on the camera's LCD.

There are systems in some stores that let you put in a memory card, look at
the photos (and sometimes do some editing and cropping) and print. Less
investment in hardware.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ --> >> Stay informed about: Looking for a digital camera up to £250 |

It depends on how small they feel comfortable with but one camera that is
small and looks nice is the Pentax Optio S. It's slightly bigger than a
credit card, 3.2 Megapixels, has 3x optical zoom and looks very stylish.
We bought one about two weeks ago from a trader on Ebay.co.uk with the
wonderful screen name of "Shutterblood" (who is an excellent trader based in
Swansea) and it cost £185 including a 128Mb SD memory card. I've just looked
on Ebay before posting this but he's only got an S4 on at the moment which
is exactly the same as ours but has a 4 Megapixel sensor rather than 3.2.
Click this link to see it <a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://tinyurl.com/2y66q" target="_blank">http://tinyurl.com/2y66q</a>
In the two weeks we've had it I've taken about 250 shots just trying it out
and I'm well impressed, but don't just take my word for it, have a look at
the reviews here <a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/pentaxoptios/" target="_blank">http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/pentaxoptios/</a> and here
<a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://www.megapixel.net/html/issueindex.php?lang=en" target="_blank">http://www.megapixel.net/html/issueindex.php?lang=en</a> (click on reviews and
then drill down to the Pentax).
Regarding printers, my understanding is (probably wrong and someone may well
refute this) that current inkjet printers aren't really up to the job.
Colours tend to fade after about a year and will run if any water is
accidentally spilled or dripped on them. Dye sublimation printers seem to be
better but I've so far (remember I've only had a digital camera for 2 weeks)
avoided the home print route, preferring to upload my photos to an online
service and get prints back through the post. <a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://www.colourmailer.co.uk" target="_blank">www.colourmailer.co.uk</a> and
<a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://www.bonusprint.co.uk" target="_blank">www.bonusprint.co.uk</a> are two that spring to mind.

I should also have said that if you're not comfortable about buying a camera
from someone on Ebay (although, like I said previously, Shutterblood is an
excellent trader) then look at somewhere like <a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://www.kelkoo.co.uk" target="_blank">www.kelkoo.co.uk</a> which will
search for prices from "real" shops.

At the end, he can see the pictures on the TV. Quality is really not
top-of-the-range, but still better than on LCD.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ --> >> Stay informed about: Looking for a digital camera up to £250 |

I have been watching a few model on eBay over the last few weeks and most of
them sell over the mail order/online dealers prices. People get over excited
bidding and pay too much and then ridiculous shipping from some.

They haven't bought one yet. After doing a lot of reading I recommended the
canon A80. But my mother says the Fuji S5000 looks nicer, so she'd prefer
to buy that! :-O I don't know why I bother! LOL  <!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ --> >> Stay informed about: Looking for a digital camera up to £250 |
