Hello Everyone!

I've used Google groups quite a bit to solve software bugs and problems
and so I wanted to give back some by sharing how I finally figured out
how to turn my digital camera into a webcam which I then use with
Yahoo! Messenger's webcam feature. Here it goes ...

Hardware:
-Canon Powershot A85 digital camera with A/V jack and Canon supplied AV
cable (yellow video plug & single audio plug)
-HP Media Center PC (AMD 64 Athlon X2); A/V plugs - S-Video, Composite
(yellow, white, red)

Software:
-Yahoo! Messenger with Voice (v.7.5.0.0.811)
-Splitcam freeware software from www.splitcamera.com, v3.27 beta (build
5, driver vers. v3.2.1) which is used to take the video signal from the
digital camera and feed it into Y! Messenger

Steps:
1) Plugged A85 into PC (canon cable to PC yellow video port; plugged
the canon single audio black plug to the PC red audio port); powered on
A85

2) Downloaded, checked for viruses, installed & launched splitcam
freeware program.
-configured software: clicked "source" button to make sure program was
using my PC's video card; clicked File->Crossbar to configure "Input"
to the correct "Video Composite In"

3) Launched Y! Messenger
-clicked Messenger->My Webcam
-click File->Preferences->Webcam
-click Camera Source; choose Splitcam Capture drop down, click OK
-click "OK" to close Y! Messenger Preferences window

And that's it! My A85 is now a Webcam and capturing images that's
being broadcasted via Y! Messenger!

Good luck!

Most decent digital camera offers composite video but not all of them
can be used in live mode like video camera. Just a heads up if someone
was going to buy a random digital camera with video out for web site
viewing.

Actually a $20 web cam can do ok 640x480 video and wouldn't drain
batteries or need external power supply to keep powered up.

I tried a $20 camera and it worked fine within the local network, but never
could get the images out on the web. Can you recommend a cheap or
preferably free program that would do it?

Microsoft Messenger. For a Mac, try SightSpeed.
