My question was a serious one since I want to convert my HI-8's but my
SONY that took 'em went South.

All I want is a way to 'play' the tapes so I can do the job.
Otherwise my HI-8 recordings are worthless.

I see there is a DCR-TRV250 for some $100 less. Any reason I should
NOT consider this one instead? Is there a competitor Digital 8
camcorder with same capability at maybe a cheaper price than SONY?

The DCR-TRV250 will NOT play your old tapes. It can only play tapes
recorded in Digital 8 format. It also doesn't record low quality stills to
a memory stick, a feature you may or may not care about.

As far as I know, nobody except Sony is currently manufacturing a Digital 8
camcorder.

I see that the SONY 318 is indeed some cheaper than the TRV350, but
since I want to transfer my 8mm HI-8 recordings to CDs, I will want to
connect the camcorder to my PC. I can do that with the 318, but only
if I spring for one of the AV devices I have read about. By the time
I do that, the total cost will reach and surpass the cost of the 350.

So, thanks for your suggestion. It was a good one. But I guess I
should buy the 350 - especially since the cheaper 250 apparently will
NOT read HI-8 tapes.
