Hi Guys,
Building a new computer using MS Win Xp SP2. Going to use SATA 2 drives,
and a gigabyte Mobo.
Other than the connection, does windows Xp instal/recognise the SATA Drives,
or doI have to instal drivers first. IF I do have to instal drivers do they
normally come wih the Mobo ?
Regards
Bob H

Usually, you will have to prepare a floppy with the sata controller's
drivers.
when installing, XP will prompt you to provide sa floppy csi/sata
drivers by pressing F6.
go through the manual of your mainboard to find out to prepare the floppy

If the SATA ports are part of the Intel [?] chipset, then probably you
can get buy without drivers, but installation of the chipset driver
(which will be required anyway) will install the proper SATA drivers.

If the SATA ports are non-chipset ports, then you will definitely need
to install "F6 drivers" and perhaps Windows drivers as well.

Note that many current Gigabyte boards have some SATA ports that are
driven by the Intel chipset and also additional ports driven by chips
that are not part of the chipset (often a JMicron chip).

if u dont have a floppy u can build ur own winxp install cd, and
slipstream the sata drivers in, or if its a seagate, run their disc
tool on the drive first to set it up for install

I see you have a number of answers, but this is my experience using a
GIGABYTE GA-M59SLI-S5 590SLI AM2 mother board.
The BIOS detects the SATA drives, IF you have XP Pro SP-2 it should
recognize the SATA drives *without* using F-6 for third party drivers
during the install unless you are going to use them as a raid.

I have both XP-64 Pro and XP Pro as dual boot and both found the
drives without doing anything outside of the standard install. I then
installed the drivers and utilities that came with the MOBoard.

Actually I used a very early OEM copy of XP Pro that I had
integretated with SP-2 and it installed just fine. (slipstreaming is
wonderful)

OTOH I do have a strange problem (more of an anoyance) with that
system, but it has nothing to do with the drives.
