connecting hub to a Dlink router causes unpredictable resu..

I'm trying to increase the number of Ethernet ports on my Dlink DI-614+ WiFi
router, getting ready for a future network upgrade (i.e. thinking of adding
additional computers to my network). So I had this little 5-port 10Mbps left
over from the old days, when I used to use a Linux PC as my router to share
Internet. 10 Mbps is good enough. So I connect up the hub to one of the
Dlink's LAN ports, switched the hub into crossover mode, attach a PC to one
of the other ports on the hub, and so it works perfectly ... for a little
while, ... and then inexplicably any PCs connected through the hub may stop
working, and then a short time later, they start working again. Now it's not
because of collisions or anything on the hub, because this is not an
overloaded hub, maybe one or two PCs are put onto it at a time, and besides
I don't see the collision light coming on.

These same PCs when they are taken off of the hub and connected directly to
the LAN ports of the Dlink, work fine all of the time. Now this is going to
affect any future upgrade plans that I may have.
