I'm getting ready to buy a digital camera or recorder after paying $45.00
plus to have 3 rolls of film developed. I'm interested in a good camera that
can take a decent amount of quality pics or video. I'll also need whatever
hardware is used to download film onto my computer. Any suggestions would be
greatly appreciated.

You request is too general. You need to define what you want or need in a
digital camera to get suggestions.
You might check some of the camera review sites on the web.
<a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://www.dpreview.com/" target="_blank">http://www.dpreview.com/</a>
<a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://www.imaging-resource.com/" target="_blank">http://www.imaging-resource.com/</a>
<a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://www.steves-digicams.com" target="_blank">http://www.steves-digicams.com</a>
There are more. Google for Digital Camera Reviews.

I'm also in the market for a digital camera. Since my computer is
fairly old, I don't have a USB port available. I don't want to add in
a card to get additional ports, so I'm looking at the Sony Mavica CD.
Anyone have any opinions on this camera?

The chemical film cameras are still cheaper.
If cost is your main concern stick with what you have.

I have to agree with you but your initial complaint stemmed from the $45 you
paid in developing. The costs have just begun in digital after you buy the
camera.
I lke my Pentax Optio 550. 5x zoom, good lens, acceptably fast shutter
speed, unbelievable battery life, small, fits in shirt pocket, fast manual
overrides on all modes, instant review button, sensitive in low light, built
in flash good for 17 feet...not 6 like most, 3D picture ability, infinite
length movie shooting.
I still want VGA movies though. It is coming on newer models now.

I take a lot of pictures and disagree. middle of the road memory and good
photo quality. I never keep most of the pics I take. I like the option of
downloading directly onto my computer. Not cheaper I would prefer the bigger
initial investment over developing all my film.

You didn't explain the costs. I just want to get shots of my boating trips
with decent quality and with a decent amount of memory.

The $45.00 is repeated again and again and again and again and again and
again and again and again and again and again and again. See what I'm
sayin'?

First you will pay about double for a decent digital camera and waste your
old one.
Second you will pay almost double for every print you have processed.
Third if you print at home the paper is $1 per sheet for anything decent.
Fourth the ink cartridges for your printer will cost you $30-$45 every 20-30
large prints.
Fifth the home printer you use will not last forever.
Sixth the harddrive space will cost you a few cents to store every print.
Eighth, good software to handle and edit your images will cost you more than
$1K and you will upgrade.
If you are thinking of doing what most digital camera owners do you will be
changing your processing techniques. This could be done with film and only
keep negatives without all the proofs much cheaper.
I still prefer digital cameras. My 3 year old Pentax zoom gathers dust in my
drawer after shooting a whole 8 rolls.

I use the disposable cameras. I don't own a camera.
> Second you will pay almost double for every print you have processed.
I would process very few pics and just email the pics to my friends I think
they may like and they can do what they want with them.
> Third if you print at home the paper is $1 per sheet for anything decent.
I think of all the photo disks I have I have only printed four or five times
in the last year.
I will not print very many at all.

I'm very conservative with my ink and understand this.

Cd's are cheap and I am conservative with my hard drive space. I burn cd's
all the time so as not to fill up my hard drive. I really enjoy the
convienince of keeping my photos on cd and catalog them and like that system
very much. Besides my hard drive is huge.

I have no desire to edit whatsoever. If I did I already have a few programs
to use that serve me just fine. I am quite computer literate and I have a
full compliment of Adobe and the newest Office XP with all the bells and
whistles. My computer is a hotrod for sure.

I am going to get a digital camera and know a few people who own them.
However they are all a year old or more and i want to get the best deal on a
current, good, all around model. I also want to post pics to my website the
same day of my sailing trips. I also want to post pics of maintenance issues
with my boat and get opionions from others in my email group the same day. I
also take jobsite pictures and would like to be able to email pics of
certain jobsite conditions to my partner. I have a multitude of uses for a
digital camera. I know what I want. I just don't know what model. Can ya
help me out and make a few suggestions? Or at least tell me what to look for
in a camera instead of trying to talk me out of it. Any help would be
appreciated.

I have just bought an Olympus C350 Zoom (known as the D-560 Zoom in
the US)
The image quality is (IMO) very good. Certainly better than the HP
DX6340 that I borrowed from a friend.
I went to my local Photo shop and tested the shutter speed compared to
the Sony DSC-P72, Canon A70 and Pentax Optio 33F
The Canon was the fastest and the Olympus second.
The Olympus was £60 cheaper than the Canon. As I wanted the camera for
the family pics so I was convinced by this review -
