just looking for some opinions here.

currently running an a7n8x deluxe with an xp2500 o/c to xp3200 speed, 1
gig of ddr400 and an ati x1950pro. so far, it hasn't let me down with
the exception of video editing and encoding (lacking SSE2), but it is
starting to chug with games such as company of heroes and the bioshock
demo.

i was considering buying an A8V-pro and a 939 X2 4200 (that will run
somewhere around 200-250 AU$ total) which would allow me to reuse the
ram and video card and my guess is probably hold off doing a full
upgrade (including PCI-E and DDR2/3) for another year or so.

i think it would be a significant processor upgrade for not much
scratch, with the prospect of overclocking as well (although i have done
zero research into overclocking the x2's)

do you know much about the k8t800 chipset? and what of other 939/AGP
motherboards? this was the first i came across that had all the features
i need (onboard audio and firewire were the two most often lacking).

I did the ssame thing. I had a p2b-ds and upgraded to an a8v because I
wanted to reuse my video card and IDE drives. However, the board has sata,
so, when ready, I can get a SATA HD, install it, move my data over, and
upgrade my board to whatever is hot. Won't be doing that for a while
though.

What gave me a boost of speed was to turn the vlinks to max in the bios.
After a clean install of xp, the boot time went from 30 to 40 seconds, down
to about 5 seconds.
