Got to love being on a mailing list when you dont want to be in the
first place. I recieved a box from Winston but since I've never been
a smoker so no idea why I got on their list in the first place.
Inside the box was a free cheap 100k pix camera (352x288 max) No
visible brand name and Windows IDs it as dual camera but no names
offered. Takes a pitful 16 shots of HQ pics before its internal
memory is full and no external memory card slot.

Probably something I'd leave in the glove box in my car in case
something interesting happens and I dont have my usual camera.

Looks like digital has just penetrated the last bastion of the film camera:
the freebie giveaway.

I for one would like to see what this camera can do. Take a few pix and put
them up where we can see them.

And just like that one, you have to pay to get the pictures
processed.

Took 5 pictures in high quality setting, only change I made post shoot
was to rotate 2 pictures to tall orientation:
http://personalpages.tds.net/~wilykat/samples/

Color seems weak and washed out even on sunny day. Green were a bit
more olive-brown and the sky seemed glaring white in middle of the
picture instead of blue.

Image quality on low compression setting however is decent. Puts to
shame my first digital camera (Quicktake 150) and probably compares to
other $20 cameras you find at Walmart.

Camera has fixed focus (4mm plastic lens, 30cm to infinity range), no
zoom, no flash, and only optical view finder. It does have LCD
display to show the numbers of pictures and modes, offers Hi (352x288)
and Lo (176x144) res shots, hi and low compression, timer (10 sec),
AVI (176x144 only), multiple shots (3 shots at a time 5 seconds
delay), and delete last photo or all.

It can take up to 18 hi res and low compression images to about 150
low res and high compression before you need to dump them and delete
them from the camera.

When connected to PC, it showed up in Explorer but as a web cam
showing live video. The only way to get pictures out is to use
propierty software included with the camera. So not really convenient
if you need to dump pictures on someone else's PC and don't have the
discs with you.

USB cable came with it and used standard A to mini B (flat with
pointed sides commonly used in Sony products), a tiny manual book,
software CD, wrist straps, and 2 (two) AAA batteries (R03)

Internal memory is SRAM and does require batteries installed and in
working order to maintain memory. The manual stated 1*16Mb of memory
which is 2 Mbyte but I think the actual memory for storing images are
under 1MB most I got was a bit over 750k worth.

The manual and CD makes no mention of who made them at all so probably
a chinese mass production and sold to companies for branding and
packaging.

Since these were mailed out for free, I can imagine them popping on
eBay soon. A quick search found just one.

From your description of it it sound almost certainly like the Argus
DC-1510.

One nice feature is it that it's supported by gphoto2 on *nix. Gphoto2
can control the camera making it useful for timelapse imaging from an
incredibly simple script.

eg
#!/bin/sh
while [ 1 ] ; do
picname=/home/dave/temp/`date "+%m%d%H%M%S.pnm"`
/usr/local/bin/gphoto2 --quiet --filename `echo $picname` --capture-preview
sleep 5
done

grabs a photo every 5 seconds and names it by the date/time to make it
easy for another script to build a video file from the frames.

What a cool barn! Where is that?? You know there is a guy
, if I remember correctly that travels the country looking
to preserve, document and catagorize these old barns. Wish
I could remember who or what it was about exactly. Will
have to google.
