Hi....
I currently have quite a new athlon 2600 xp computer, which contains an MSI
gforce4-mx440. It used to be pantssssss but with the new drivers it's
actually quite 'good'!
However, if i get a bit of spare dough/malooza/cash id' like to buy a new
card.
When i say 'new', however, i don't mean £350. Is it general consensus the
gfroce4-ti(4200?) sort of range is good value for money?
Should i possibly splash out on a new card if it *will* give performance
benefits and make games look much much better; or should i just wait until i
possibly need to upgrade, say in a year or so's time, when games have far
higher requirements graphics wise?

The longer you wait, the faster you can get for the money.
Except for passing bargains, like the fx5900xt, which will not last long --
it is a way for nvidia to dump all their fx5900 chips.

I would pass on the Ti4200 at this stage. I have one and it's starting to
show its age. I would wait until the 6800 cards are released and start
driving down the prices of the older cards then I would look at the 5900
group; 5900, 5900SE and 5900XT. Even the 5900 Ultra and the 5950 should be
affordable in a few months. The low end 6800 is also worth looking at.
My next upgrade will probably be to the 6800 non-Ultra when the price drops
below $200US at Newegg. Got to see how it performs though.

Is 175.00 considered a bargain for the 5900xt card? 128 MB.

That's the lowest price at newegg.com.
Blasphemy: they also have a Radeon 9800 Pro for $210.

How long do you suppose that will take?
Maybe they'll come out with something that will correspond to the ti4200
when they came out with the ti4600?

I don't know what planet you rich boys live on, but 'cheap' -graphics card
wise - is under £100...
Hence why i mentioned the ti-range. Thanks for the no-help at all; i'd have
had better luck talking to a sandstone brick wall, say mid 1960's, then
bludgeoning myself with a rolling pin for half an hour.
But, as i said, thanks for the no-help...

I agree with too much coffee here. Prices will drop in the next several months ahead. And don't
believe all the crap about Nvidia "dumping" 5900 chips. They will be manufacturing them for a long
time to come. They are and will be a big seller for years to come. I am going to "try" to hold out
till they hit $99US. If prices level off between $125-150 I may be forced to shell out the extra
dough. But $99 would mean a quick sale for me.

yes - in the budget range a ti4*** is the best value at the mo
- to go up from there requires a 5700 or a 9600 which you could get from
around £100 new. look for a secondhand Ti on ebay and expect to pay around
£40 give or take (+p&p) - with your CPU and 512mb minimum you can play Far
Cry happily and should be able to play HL2 no problem too.

<a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://www.komplett.co.uk/" target="_blank">http://www.komplett.co.uk/</a>
Shell out the extra dough and you'll not be sorry, they may not be around
for long.
Komplett also do 5700 Ultra for £120
As an aside, they are also advertising 6800 Ultra at £405

The planet where people have jobs. Get off your arse, and earn yourself some
money.

Cheap = Crap.
You get what you pay for !
GFX cards start at £100 these days, for a Radeon 9600 Pro. This is the
minimum card you should consider, that's capable of gaming.
If you have a smidgeon more cash to spend, you'd be much better off with a
5900 XT for £125
<a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://www.komplett.co.uk/k/ki.asp?sku=123000&cks=PRL" target="_blank">http://www.komplett.co.uk/k/ki.asp?sku=123000&cks=PRL</a>
Having said that, you can pick up a 9800 Pro for £140 these days
<a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://www.komplett.co.uk/k/ki.asp?sku=122901&cks=PRL" target="_blank">http://www.komplett.co.uk/k/ki.asp?sku=122901&cks=PRL</a>
which easily gives the best performance-per-pound.
Don't bother with anything more expensive - they offer diminishing returns
above that price point.
> Hence why i mentioned the ti-range.
TI range aren't a good buy any more. No DirectX-9 capability for a start !
If you're not bothered about gaming, then just spend £30 on a 5200.
