I have an Intel D815EEA Motherboard, for the Pentium 3. I have windows XP
pro installed, and a 40 GB Hard Drive. I also have a CDRW & DVDROM installed
in the IDE. My question is that can I put in an 80 GB additional hard drive
as well as my existing 40GB one?
I went through the manual for the motherboard, and it says:
"To take advantage of the high capacities typically available today, hard
drives are automatically configured for Logical Block Addressing (LBA) and
to PIO Mode 3 or 4, depending on the capability of the drive."
Also on the intel website, my motherboard (all BIOS versions) was listed
under the heading:
"with the indicated and later BIOS versions, that provide support BIOS
support for greater than 8.4 GB, include: "
I assumed that a stand alone 80 GB can be installed, but can my system hold
both as well as two cd drives?

Yea, just hook up one HD as slave and the other master or both cable select
(on the same channel, of course) and you'll be fine.

Yes you may. That's exactly what I have now cept the mobo.
ASUS CUSL2-C
UDMA-100 Cable -
Quantum Fireball AS 40 GB on primary master.
Hitachi (IBM Deskstar) 80 GB on primary slave.
Normal IDE Cable -
Hitachi GD-2500 DVD on secondary master.
Panasonic 4x CDR on secondary slave.

You can install the 80 GB drive on the same cable as your 40 GB drive but performance will be poor. Your drives are designed for DMA mode 4 or 5 and since your motherboard does not support this they will probably default to PIO mode 0. You need an ATA expansion card, e.g. Promise ATA100/ATA133 adapter to get good performance with your hard drives.

No, the performance will be good enough, it will default to the max the
board supports, which was either ATA66 or ATA100... probably ATA100.
