Post subject: more help on 2460 Dimms needed
Archived from groups: alt>comp>periphs>mainboard>tyan (more info?)

i have a Tyan s2460

right now i have in there two 256mb MA Labs ECC REgisterd
DDR ram.

The unit is running nice, stable, etc.
I have the 2 dimms in slot 1 and slot 2 from the left to the right in the
2460.

ok, so i get this new MA LABS 512mb ECC Dimm --- i tried to put it in with
the other Dimms but got blue screens, errors., etc. I put it in the far
left dimm slot. A poster here named "DEFAULT" was very helpful to inform
me to put the higher capacity dimms in the first bank slot. So i put the
512mb Dimm in the far left slot.

first i had it in alone and it seemed to boot up fine and work fine. then i
put in one of the 256mb dimms in the 2nd slot and I got a BLUE SCREEN - i
think it was a parity-type error. Had more errors after that.

So now i tried the 512mb Dimm by itself in the far left slot -- and yes i
did get some errors and things - it was very unstable. I did manage to get
to Windows but got some errors, etc. It clearly wasnt flowing with the
system.

Now i am back to the two 256Dimms and it is working fine again.

I know it seems that the 512mb Dimm is bad, but is it? the guy said he
tested it and all - all was fine. What am I missing - is there something i
need to do to run one 512mb Dimm along with two 256mb Dimms?

THANKS FOR ANY HELP HERE,
JDH

Hi there,

According to the S2460 manual, there is NO combination listed that allows
the use of 2 x 256Mb and one 512Mb modules (If I have your config
correct...)

It will allow a 256 dimm in the DIMM1 slot and a 256 dimm in the DIMM3 slot
for 512Mb of RAM.

The only other combination listed with a 512Mb module is:

DIMM1 512Mb
DIMM2 512Mb
DIMM4 1024Mb

for a total of 2Gb..

My suggestion would be to take the module back, or buy some more RAM...

Regards

BTW, all this is on page 21 of their Motherboard manual, which you can
download from their website. It lists exactly what combinations are
possible...
