Archived from groups: alt>comp>hardware (more info?)

I have an Onspec hard drive enclosure CT-9202A REV 2 3 that I used to
use with W98SE satisfactorily.

I put it aside a while ago, but now I want to use it with my WXP PRO.
I can't get it to work!

When I try 'add new hardware', the drivers seem unacceptable to WXP. I
downloaded the W2000 set of files, but they don't work either. All
those files end with .bin, which seemed odd. I removed all the '.bin'
segments of all the filenames, but I still can't get things to work.

I have a printout of the maker's .pdf file, but it doesn't seem to
offer any thing to help me.

WXP does pick up the device as external 'USB mass storage device'.

I email'ed the company at techsupport.TakeThisOut@part2.com
but the email was returned undelivered.

Can anyone help me?

You should not need, nor try to "add new hardware". XP has
universal support for external USB drives. I suspect your
XP installation is broken somehow (windows likes to break
itself).

Well that brought a smile to my face!
Sorry but you can't just "remove all the '.bin' " and get
anywhere.

Maybe if you link to the product page and download pages for
these files it'll help.

Ok, and then?

In Device Manager, is the drive listed along with other
drives under the "Disk Drives" category?

Is there a listing under "Universal Serial Bus Controllers"
that reads something like "USB Mass Storage Device"?

If you go into Computer Management
(Start-Run-"compmgmt.msc"), under the Storage, Disk
Management category do you see the drive's Volume, or any
other info in the right-hand pane of the window?

Are there any lights lit "wrong" on the enclosure and/or the
drive sounds like it's spinning but not mishaving like
clicking-dying sounds?

I have two XP PRO machines. I did think XP should pick the device up
on USB automatically. The machines didn't act quite the same
regarding the USB connection. One seemed to at least recognize the
presence of a 'mass storage device', whereas the other does not. That
is - on the first, Device Manager showed presence of a 'mass storage
device' under USBs, but the second did not.

Then lo, this morning, when I turned both machines on, and connected
the enclosure to each, both machines do now recognize the presence
of the hard drive in the enclosure, and Windows Explorer, allows me to
explore the files therein. Device Manager shows the ONSPEC drive
under the USBs. This means it works fine now. That's odd.

I didn't think so, but I didn't know what else to try. What could I
have done? Just for future reference.

I did that - www.part2.com.

The enclosure has its own on/off button which when on, lights a green
light, which is on. The HD drive itself whirs and gets warm. I had
tried two drives.

I guess I am happy now - thanks for your interest.
