Could someone help with SATA II hard drive problems?

Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 ST3320620AS 320GB 16MB Cache SATA2

My motherboard doesn't support SATA II but I was told/read that it
will simply default to SATA ONE.

The Drive has a Jumper, ON=SATA ONE, OFF=SATA II
My Jumper is OFF because I thought it was suppose to see this and
simply default.

Should I put the jumper ON, thus making it SATA ONE?

I am getting some horribly slow benchmark results, about 1/10th the
speeds other people with this SAME drive are seeing.

I'd appreciate any help you could offer me.

Windows has a little trick it plays. If CRC errors are detected while
reading the drive, Windows cranks down the transfer rate. It will eventually
be cranked down to PIO (polled mode) transfer.

For a benchmark, you can try HDTach. For a drive in PIO mode, expect to see
a flat horizontal line on the HDTach chart, with performance at the 4 to 5MB/sec
level. If the line is tilted, and is 60MB/sec on the left of the chart, and
40MB/sec on the right, that is what is should look like.

The "Workaround" section here, tells you how to reset the error count,
by uninstalling the driver. Windows will reinstall it on the next
reboot.
