Older Canon Speedlite flash units were not designed for cameras hat
use E-TTL such as the Digital Rebel - but should work fine in
"auto" or "manual" modes.

If you put the 199A on a Rebel, and it should trigger fine when you
press the shutter. However, it will not use E-TTL flash metering,
so you have to use it as an "auto" flash - or in fully manual mode.

The 199A instruction booklet tells you on page 10ff how to set the
flash up for "auto" (variable power) operation. Set the camera sutter
at 1/60th and select the aperture.

If "auto" for some reason doesn't work, your last resort is manual.
Then the flash will always fire at full blast.

Again, use a shutter speed of 1/60th and use the calculator dial
on the flash to compute the correct aperture. This is explained
in detail at page 34ff in the 199A instruction booklet.

To avoid the hassle of "auto" flash and manual operation, you need
E-TTL:

In addition to Canon's own models, I've listed some third party flash
guns claimed by their manufacturer to be "Canon digital" compatible.
These third party guns use reverse engineered interfaces for E-TTL
compatibility. The Sigma 500 DG Super has a fair reputation for E-TTL
compatibility, the Metz models have received more mixed reviews in
this area, but make up for this by having an excellent auto mode.
The Sunpak is a very new entry, and I've haven't seen any reports
on it yet.

The Sigma and all the Canons except the 220 EX and 380 EX can be used
in a infrared wireless (w/l) master/slave setup (the 420 EX as slave
only) and are compatible with the wireless transmitter ST-E2.
