I was using the KT7-RAID too. I still remember the PCI latency bug which
decreased the useable PCI bandwidth from the usual ~120MB/s of a normal PCI
bus to about 80MB/s. If you have more than a few PCI cards like TV tuner
card, ATA/IDE card, NIC, they could easily saturate the PCI bus. I consider
that a bug in the chipset design which caused me to lose faith in VIA
chipsets.
Anyways, one other suggestion is to get a new drive for the boot drive.
Your old drive you're trying to save is probably pretty slow. Even if it's
a 7200rpm, it's still slower than the new ones, unless you're considering
striping them into a RAID-0 array. But then, for the new motherboards, only
the SATA channels are RAIDable, not the PATA channels. I suggest getting a
Raptor 36GB for your boot drive. Those have come down in price to about $70
after rebate, which makes them a pretty good deal. Also, then you can use
one of the SATA channels for your boot drive, and save the two IDE channels
for your ATAPI devices and your old PATA drives.
I hope you're not trying to re-use the old power supply too. Probably need
a solid power supply of at least 400W if stability is your primary concern.
