I got a motherboard recently from a company that was closing down. Problem
is I can't figure out what brand / model it is so that I can figure out what
kind of ram to buy. How would you do that? I keep looking for a label
somewhere..
It's red (like the silicon is red instead of green), it's got a p4 2.4ghz
proc on it, it's either micro-atx or itx I'm not sure (it has only 2 pci
slots). The bios chip says AMI which kind of narrows it down a little. Oh
and the guy told me it was 800 fsb. But he doesn't know make/model.
What motherboard brand is red?
(does that rule out asus because all asus boards are brown?)
thanks >> Stay informed about: How do identify motherbord make/model? |

Look between the pci slots or in that area.

You can download aida its free on the internet and it will identify the
board and show you the bios version.

The only red motherboard that I have used are made by MSI (Microstar). How
to tell which model is going to be hard. Just take note of the numbers you
see on the MB and do a search. Hope you get a hit.

Well, the memory slots are keyed to accept only one type of memory.
Assuming that he has some laying about, the one that fits the slot will be
the correct type (SDRAM, DDR SDRAM, DDR2, etc). The other question is the
speed, but odds are you're not going to fry anything using slower memory.
So if you can boot it to a POST screen, you can probably get enough
identifying info to figure out what it is.
Alternately, you can check the PCB for any sort of silkscreened numbers or
lettering, usually near the PCI slots that will indicate the model number.
It may not indicate the make, but if you have the model number then
identifying the make should be pretty easy.

Let's not assume that he has piles of memory lying around. (because he
doesn't).
