Post subject: can't install windows on SATA drive
Archived from groups: comp>sys>ibm>pc>hardware>networking (more info?)

I recently put together a new box including the ASUS A7V600
motherboard and the Seagate SATA hard drive.

The power adapter cable had to be ordered from afar. Spent too much
on shipping and brokerage fee.

Then, it was an issue to have the BIOS detect the drive.

Now I am trying to install Windows 2000 Pro and the installation
program does not recognize the drive. The driver must be missing.

And there is also the SATA controller driver to consider.

Can anyone help?

Thanks in anticipation,

mr_scary

Drivers for that sata controller is what you're missing and what will preclude
Windows from ever completing the installation...<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

Are you saying that it is impossible to install Windows onto a SATA
hard drive?<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

I think more what he's saying is that you need to get the drivers for the
device and when you're booting up from CD when it askes if there are any
special drivers, you need to have them ready on a floppy. Or at least
that's what I get from that note...<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

I am pleased to announce that I have been successful in installing W2K
on this drive. The solution was a combination of many things.

1. Proper connctions on motherboard
2. Having the correct BIOS settings
3. Using a Seagate utility to create pair of boot diskettes which
enabled me to partition the drive (with NTFS)
4. Finding the RAID controller driver and special file (txtsetup.oem)
from the Asus software (m/b CD) and placing it on a floppy.
5. Specifying, during the Windows install, to load that driver
(pressing F6)<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->
