Hey!
Was troubleshooting memory in my wife's sys. Found out I was running the
CAS latency wrong after I messed around inside the case. My CPU fan blocks
the ram slots so I removed it to swap ram. Put it back but didn't connect
the fan (bonehead... YES!!!!). It went black after a few, I went into bios
and noticed the temp at 90 degrees C. Shut it down. Connected fan.
Booted into windoze only kept getting b.s.o.d. or reboots. Figured I cooked
the cpu so I decided to underclock it. On reboot everything runs (cpu fan,
drives, etc.), but no beeps and no video. I've tried resetting the bios
with the jumper and pulling the battery to clear the cmos but no dice. Any
suggestions??? Probably just head over to Fry's and dump another $70 for a
replacement board and cpu but figured that I could save some time and money
by asking for help.

Give the PC a 20 min. power break, no power, no battery, reset CMOS try
again with the original ram. If you booted to bsod at that point everything
worked. Maybe the new ram died and trying the original ram in different
configurations might work. Unfortunately, 90C is the max temp allowed for
AMD (85C for some AMDs).

Well at Fry's you can buy today's bargain and return it unopened if you get
wifey's working again. Then again maybe you do like me and upgrade your pc
and upgrade wifey's with the replaced parts?<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

Hey! Thanks for the response.
Did head to Fry's and picked up a new board with a boxed 1800+ cpu for $60.
Tried the old processor in the new board and it worked. Was still a bit
flakey so I checked the ram and one of the dimms had two damaged gold
contacts. Can't tell if they were broken off on removal/insertion or if
something "electrical" jacked them up. Still debating whether to use the
2200+ on the chance that it had something to do with damaging the memory.
Ever heard of such a thing? In the meantime, the new board and proc. are
chugging along with only 256 megs of DDR.
Thanks again for the response.

I doubt the cpu damaged the DDR after swapping cpus, hsfs, memory on boards
I find cpus hard to kill. If the 2200+ cpu works that's better than a 1800+
cpu. Check the memory socket on the old board to see if there's damage.
I've had an OEM chip or two from Fry's just die. My question is, does the
old cpu, memory and board work now that you've found the bad chip. And if
it works can you get your money back from Fry's?

I just gave in and used the newer, slower chip. When I get a chance I'll
test the old one and use it if it is good.
Fry's is pretty good about returns within the return period. After that,
you're S.O.L. Aside from the occasional tendency to forget that it is using
the 133 mhz bus, this sys is running very well.
