I've used the k7s6a motherboard for a long time. It works fine, but
sometimes it will reboot spontantaneously. I is doing this regardless of
what other hardware or operative system I use. Also the screen will
sometimes suddenly turn black - for about one second, and then come back
to normal. The reboot is immediate. The computer can be turned on for
days without neither the sudden reboot nor the black screen appearing.
When I stress-test the computer with burnk7 and similar programs, it
will not crash, and temperatures seem to be fine. What could be the
caouse of this intermittent problem? My own guess is that it has
something to do with cpu or memory, but I have noticed no correlations.
I'm using an Athlon Xp 1800+ cpu, clocked normally at winter,
underclocked at summer because otherwise it would be unstable.

Mats,
It SOUNDS like a cpu temp problem, but you say you monitor the cpu
temp......my next guess is power supply. What are you running for power? I
have found the 400 watt Allied power supply has great specs, (not just a
bogus 400 watt rating, example is some of the cheap 400 watt pwr supp. like
compUSA) and it is on-sale at newegg for just 30 bucks, I have 3 HD's ( 2 80
gigs and 1 160 gig so they do draw some power) 3 optical drives, 3 case
fans, (some with leds) chipset fan, cpu fan (CPU fan is a DR thermal I
highly recommend, quiet and it cools better than a 2X expensive all copper,
2 TON, (read heavy) jet engine sounding heatsink I had before) and 2 cold
cathode lamps, running on one with absolutely no problems what so ever, and
the CPU is overclocked.
(I am not a newegg rep. just a very happy customer)
Let us know what kind of power supply you have.....and the complete machine
specs. would be nice too....it could be memory, but without you running
something like memtest it is not possible to know, I believe the prog is
memtest86 and it runs in it's own environment (boots from a floppy) and will
most likely rule out any mem probs. try it...too.......let us know, and I'll
try and help! Good Luck.

I'm having a similar problem with my K7VTA3 rev 3.1. Already swapped out
the PS, ram and video card, so I know it's not those causing the reboots.
Actually, the last few days it's rebooting several times a day. Sometimes
it'll get up and running (apparently fine) for several hours. Other times
it'll barely make it to the Windows splash screen.

Ive read several posts about cmos battery maybe attributing to this, so I
bought a new one...no joy. Ran fine for about 20 minutes and sure enough,
reboot. Saw where someone suggested putting a fan on the northbridge
heatsink. Tried it...same deal, only THIS time it rebooted over and over
for 10 minutes, never even making it past post.

Ok....so I read thru all the forums I could find and came across one post
that suggested moving the jumper from 133 to 100. Tried this out
tonight...ran fine....a little slower than I'm used to, but seemed ok. (I
have a 2000XP chip and 1 256mb DDR at the moment). Well....I thought the
problem sovled....until I'm in the middle of a game 5 hours later, when it
reboots yet again.

.. (sorry....originally this board shut off, after messing around with it
now it just reboots)

Now it's ran fine for pretty much 2 years solid, but I do recall it shutting
off on me once in a blue moon. Problem is, NOW it barely wants to run more
than a couple hours and wants to reboot again.

So, I've ruled out the ram, the video card, the power supply, hell, I've
even removed my soundcard and used the onboard. No joy in any scenario.
So, my question is, has anyone got any good ideas, or maybe know what might
truly be wrong with this thing??? I hate to have to trash it, cause it's
been awesome til now.

(I do have another board on order, with a 2600XP chip. Bought a PC-CHIPS
848LU)

I should probably just sigh and toss it out, but ya'all know what THAT feels
like LOL

Please, any suggestions will be most appreciated.

TIA

Look at the tops of all the capacitors on your MB to be sure none are
bulging or leaking. My K7S5A started acting like that and found that two of
my capacitors are bulging. There is a guy on the net that will replace them
for $50.00 + shipping both ways or in other words the cost of two new k7S5A
motherboards. If the caps are bad toss the board.

Well, from what I can tell, they seem to look fine. Guess it'll be the
scrapheap for this baby. I do have it up for now, went back into the bios
and made sure the ram was set at 100 as well. Going on 8 hours steady now.
Once the new board/chip get here, I'll just push this aside for the kids to
use until it's dead forever.
I really loved this board too. Wasn't any good for overclocking, but I
never tried it with pc2700 ram. It might have made it faster, but I doubt
by all that much. What I liked most tho, was the 2 RAID controllers on it.
Was nice to have 4 extra HD's for storage space. Ah well....I'll just have
to put a couple in the wifes P4 and pray she doesn't delete anything LOL.

THX

Try opening the case leaving one side of it open. Have an external fan
blowing into it. This rebooting problem happened to me and still does
unless I have my precious fan blowing on my inner computer parts. This
rebooting only happens when using high processing applications such as
games. Have the fan blowing before the overheating takes place that
should prevent it. Also, after the pc reboots go into the cmos and
check the cpu temperature and make sure that your cpu fan is working
properly.

I hope this is of help.

I have a 20" window fan blowing into my case. I've been doing that for
months. Smile It seemed to help until recently. Started doing it when it
first shut off in the middle of a game. Now that my fsb is set to 100 it's
apparently stable again. I also have a fan on the Northbridge heatsink.
Temps were always fairly cool, BUT the Northbridge chipset always felt
extremely hot. ECS should have put a heat sensor on it too, not just a
processor sensor.
I'm just gonna set this pos up for my kids. They'll never know the
difference in speed. LOL I'm replacing it with a PCCHIPS 848LU and 2600XP
chip. Faster all the way around.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->
