Post subject: Best mainboard for P4 3.0 / 800 FSB
Archived from groups: alt>comp>periphs>mainboard>gigabyte (more info?)

I am working out a spec for a PC to build in the near future. I intend to
use the Intel P4 3GHZ with 800MHZ FSB, and would like to know the best MB to
use. I have identified three possible Gigabyte MB's - one 'cheapie', one
mid price and one costing more than my budget. Does anyone have any
feelings / experience for / against any of these ?
(1) GA-81PE1000 PRO
(2) GA-81K1100
(3) GA-8KNXP

The rest of the spec is briefly - PC3200 x 512Mb memory, 9600 PRO graphics,
Seagate SATA 120GB hard disk, Sony DRU510A DVD writer, Creative Audigy 2
sound and a 17" TFT monitor (make to be decided)

The main use will be production of home videos and digital/film photograph
scanning, olus the usual internet and office uses.

Any offers ?

Except for the KNXP-ultra! Very Happy

Just be careful with the pc3200 ddr choice, read all the posts in this
group about memory incompatibility.

Can you run faster ram say PC3500 or PC3700 in there and just have it run at
DDR400 speed? The price difference isn't much between the two for me (I"m
going with the Kinston 1GB Kit) and would like to be a little faster than
what the board runs to avoid maxing out the memory.

The memory will only run as fast as the FSB, so DDR467 will run at DDR400.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

Right which is what I would expect. But if I get say PC3700 and I could
conceivably use them in a later mobo down the road as well that could take
advantage of them right? Plus you wouldn't be maxing out the memory bus
speed if they are set up to run at DDR467 but are running down at DDR400....

That's why they are selling this faster memory, for the techno suckers among
us that like numbers and headroom.

Doing almost the same setup as yours, went with the GA-8IK1100 with
P42.8 800mhz, 2x512MB PC3200, 2 Seagate SATA 120GB (RAID 0), Radeon 9800
Pro 128MB, Pioneer DVR-106D, LG 4480 DVD/CD-RW, Audigy 2(bulk). So far
everything works great, still doing Window updates and software install
.. Have not tweak the BIOS yet as it's stable now. I would suggest
getting an extra Seagate to run RAID 0 makes ripping DVD and Video
editing a lot faster, especially if you deal with large size
videos/pictures.
