Yeah I had tried the different AGP aperture size. no difference. I
haven't tried an older version of the drivers. but easy enough. I
also tried changing the hardware accleration settings and various
choices of antialiasing and other settings none of which helped.
I read on microsoft's web that some video cards don't use the
parameter that dxdiag reads for AGP texture acceleration
(GetAvailDriverMemory is the parameter) but still do it. I've got an
email into my vendor to find out if this is one.
on with the fight...

If that's the case you might want to try searching for a game or benchmark that
will tell you for sure if acceleration is working. Some games won't work
without it. 3DMark 2001 might also show a really low score without it enabled.
Then you could compare your score to a similar system from the data base.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ --> >> Stay informed about: How can I make agp texture acceleration available? |

Sometimes the fix is what you would least expect.
Give this shot if you want.
Go into add and remove,
uninstall the nvidia drivers.
Don't re-boot yet
go into device manager delete all devices related to AGP
Now re-boot.
Windows should search and install something at this point.
After it does check in dxdiag to see if it is enabled, it probably won't be
though.
Now I would re-install the chipset drivers, video drivers and DirectX in that
order.
Check again to see if it is enabled.
You probably have already tried this but I would try it again.
I also think that WinMe could be part of the problem like you posted. Have you
tried re-installing WinMe? Maybe some of the system files are corrupted.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ --> >> Stay informed about: How can I make agp texture acceleration available? |

Havn't tried removing the agp stuff but have done the video drivers a
few times. I'll try the sequence you suggested. I've been hearing to
do the video drivers after the directX so haven't tried it the other
way yet.
I've got a copy of XP coming with hopes that this will become a bad
memory so to speak.
thanks all for the suggestions.

I think the order of DirectX matters too much but I would do it last.
Anytime you change hardware like sound card or video card you should re-install
DirectX so it can re-determine the new hardware.

I tried doing the install this way and sad to say it ended up the
same. I did receive feedback from asus. They said that I should
upgrade to XP. Didn't exactly verify that their board had problem
with ME. The letter was quite terse. I think I'm convinced. Now if
I get the same sort of answer from Gainward...( video card maker)
I'll have a concensus...
It's certainly been a learning experience.

I don't think the problem is specifically with WinME. I think it is more a
combination of things with WinME such as older motherboard and newer video
card. Do you have an older video card you can try that has texture acceleration
like a Geforce 3 or 4? Also what version of drivers have you tried? Have you
tried a few other versions?
I would be really surprised if installing Windows XP didn't solve the problem
though.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ --> >> Stay informed about: How can I make agp texture acceleration available? |

As part of my troubleshooting, I thought to put my old geforce 3 video
card from my win2k machine (it shows agp texture acceleration enabled)
but apparently this mb doesn't support anything but AGP 8X. I tried
two other older video cards and they too wouldn't work. I read in the
manual that this MB only supports AGP 8X and 4X. So i guess my older
card was maybe a 2X.

8X AGP is downward compatable with 4X AGP. I don't believe there are any 8X
only motherboards. The Geforce3 should also be a 4X card. The reason I think it
doesn't work though is because there are some 3.3 volt only 4X video cards from
what I have read. I'm not sure if that is exactly true though going by what is
at the link below. They don't mention anything about 3.3 volt only 4X only
video cards. I also think it if it was only 3.3 volt only it has an extra tab
on the card to keep you from putting it in the wrong slot.

I had expected it to work too. Somewhere I read that some cards
weren't quite built to the standard they were released at. Especially
those that came out early. Since it worked on a 4x mb, and not on the
one that is 8x I figured it was one of these.

Anything is possible I guess, but if it worked on a 4X mb then I see no reason
why it shouldn't work with your mb now which is 8X and 4X.
Have you looked at the edge connector on the Geforce3? It should tell you if
the card is 3.3volt only. Look at the edge carefully and compare it to what is
on this website.
