Post subject: Question about matched CPU's
Archived from groups: comp>sys>ibm>pc>hardware>chips (more info?)

Hi all,

I have an old ABIT VP6 mother board and it only has one CPU (933mhz) in it.
I would like to add a second CPU. Or, buy 2 CPU's at 1 Ghz. I know that the
CPU's should be "matched". I don't know what that means. The CPU that's in
there now is stamped Malay and 933/256/133/1.7v and L848a461-8355 SL4C9. I
think the " '00 " on it means it was manufactured in 2000. What do I need
to
look for for a second CPU? If need be I will buy two replacement CPU's if
thats what I have to do to get them matched.
What would happen if they are not "matched?"

Thanks
Chris

The VP6 is more picky than most - cpus need to be the same stepping. Yours
is marked SL4C9, which is cC0 stepping. You need another 933 cpu that is
cC0 stepping.

Thanks Tony,

Without trying to make this thread look like a bad run-on sentence, I have
to ask what is stepping. You can go semi-tech. on me since I have had a
college course in analog and another in digital electronics and a couple of
computer programming courses. My last 8 years have been in PBX telecom. and
Cisco routers so most of what I understand is signaling, propagation delay,
etc. and programming. As long as you don't get too deep I should understand
it.

P.S. How does SL4C9 translate to cC0 stepping. Do you mean that I have to
find another CPU that is stamped SL4C9?

'don't mean to sound like I'm bragging about or trying to look stupid, I
just wanted to give you a reference point that I can understand from.

Basically you are correct in assuming that you need another SL4C9 (this is
the s-spec that is used to determine dual operation compatibility) to be
sure that it will work with your existing processor. There are usually a
few available on ebay - for example there are 4 available on ebay.co.uk at
the time of writing
