I need to put some video clips on a CD (or DVD if that won't work) to
take use in a presentation 1800 miles away. The facilities there have
a laptop PC connected to an LCD projector. I've saved the .avi clips
on a CD-R as 480 x 720 mpeg1 files and they play fine on my computer's
CD drive. My concern is that when the video is shown large through the
LCD projector it will become grainy and unwatchable. Is there anyone
in this group who has had experience with this method that can tell me
how it will work?

It all depends on the quality of the projector and who far the
projector is from the screen. It really can vary a lot.

In a more general sense:

VCD resolution is 352x240. Thats said to be equivalent to VHS quality
depending on the quality of the encoding. I'm sure people have done
presentations off of VHS tape before where ever you're going to be,
without too much complaint, and you've gone even more high-res than
that. I don't think you should have too much problem.

If you're really concerned, the best case scenario would require you
to find out the native resolution of that projector in advance and
re-encode your file for that resolution. There's no point in encoding
higher res than the projector's native res.
