Archived from groups: alt>comp>periphs>videocards>nvidia (more info?)

I have been trying the nVidia PureVideo decoder and after the trial
period elapsed decided to remove it from my system.

Since removing it I have been getting an error message in Windows
'Event Viewer' as follows:-

Event Type: Error
Event Source: Service Control Manager
Event Category: None
Event ID: 7026
Date: 14/03/2007
Time: 09:52:43
User: N/A
Computer:
Description:
The following boot-start or system-start driver(s) failed to load:
nvport

I have searched all files on my system and there is no"nvport" file.

My motherboard uses a nVidia Chipset and I am using the nVidia 93.71
video driver with my Gigabyte 7600GT video card.

This error problem only appears to have arisen since removing the
NVidia PureVideo decoder, has anyone experienced the same error and if
so how does one get rid of it?

(Sorry if this is the wrong group for this posting).

Cheers - Agzee

Don't go digging in Event Viewer if everything is functioning normally... If
the "problem" doesn't cause a pop-up error message window, it isn't a
problem.

That said, you can take a look in MSConfig and Services.Msc and see if there
are any suspicious nVidia startup items.

Thanks for the advice, will check in MSConfig and Services.Msc.

Unfortunately when resuming from Hibernation in Windows I am getting a
STOP message and when checking Events Viewer it coincides with an
ERROR report in relation to an attempt to load "nvport".

After 'Googling' I have come across some information that when one
removes nVidia Purevideo it leaves remnants in the registry.

It is just a case of finding out what entries need to be removed from
the registry to overcome the STOP problem.

I have checked all the FAQ messages on the nVidia website but there is
nothing relating to the removal of Purevideo, so will most probably
post a message on the nVidia website to see what they suggest.

Recovering from STR and STD (sleep and hibernation modes) to an error
free operating state is wonderful in theory and unlikely in practice.

That your video drivers, or portions of it are responsible is no surprise.

If you would like to see which sys files and other files are being
loaded during boot, either use a utility such as autoruns (google) or
boot with the bootlog switch in your boot.ini file and examine ntbtlog.txt

You will likely find nvport in your windows\system32\drivers directory,
but merely deleting it might not delete all instances and all references
to it.

It is the first time that I have tried using STR or STD, but there are
the odd glitches with it!

Will try Googling for the utility you mentioned (Autoruns), it will be
interesting to see what exactly is loading during boot.

When I uninstalled the nVidia Purevideo decoder 'nvport.sys' was
automatically removed from the windows\system32\drivers directory.

It would appear that there is an attempt to try and load a
non-existent driver (nvport.sys) which is causing the problem, I have
noticed that in the registry there are two folders one is 'nvport' the
other is 'Legacy_nvport'.

Have posted a question on the nVidia website asking if it is safe to
delete these references to 'nvport' from the registry.

Thanks for the suggestions.
