I am having trouble with a video card that I have had for quite
awhile. It is an nvidia geforce fx5200. My screen flickers and
sometimes my pc reboots when I try to play any kind of video file (
avi, mpg, wmv etc). This happens on windows media center, zoom player,
divx player, assorted dvd playing programs etc. I am forced to keep
my hardware acceloration all the way down and therefor cannot play
any kind of 3d games either. My monitor refresh rate is 60 hertz (as
low as it will go) and my resolution is 1024x768 ( I used to be able
to keep it at 1600x1200 but changed it thinking that might be causing
the problem). I am using the 81.85 drivers but this was happening with
my previous drivers as well (61.77,71.89 and 77.77). I am running on
an A-Bit BE7-Raid mother board with pentium 4 2.4 ghz processor. 1gig
of RAM. I am also using directX 9.0c.Any help would be greatly
appreciated.

Paul:
The first two thoughts that come to mind are that either the video card or
the RAM is failing. Since you did the natural first step and tried different
video drivers, I'd suggest trying the following:
1. Reduce the amount of RAM. If you have two DIMMs, try using only one
and try it in each of the memory sockets. If one of these combinations
work, it could point to a faulty RAM module, a faulty RAM slot, a poorly
seated RAM, too much loading on the RAM bus, or insufficient power for the RAM.
2. Try increasing the AGP voltage up to a maximum of 5%. This could indicate
that the AGP slot is unable to supply sufficient current at the rated voltage.
(This would be a BIOS setting.)
3. Try increasing the RAM voltage up to a maximum of 5%. Once again, this
could indicate a problem with the power supply to the RAM.
(This would be a BIOS setting.)
4. Try changing the RAM usage speed. You are likely using the SPD (serial
presence detect values from the ROM on the DIMM). Try using something
like the "slower" or "safe" values in the BIOS.
Good luck,

It might also be a dodgy PSU or an overheating problem - are whatever fans you've got in your PC running OK, and is the heatsink on
the Graphics card clean?
