This might be a stupid question- but is this driver helper service
absolutely necessary? I ran a system utility that determined that I might
want to permanently disable it.. Thanks for any tips.

I've ALWAYS disabled it since it was first added to geforce drivers years
ago. I've never had a problem. In fact, many people report FEWER problems by
disabling this service.
I give you the thumbs up to go ahead and disable it.

I used to disable this service back when I had a GF3, but since my
recent return to nVidia with a 6800 I've left it alone, thought it now
might actually have something to do with profiles and dynamic
overclocking. Seeing the original post I decided to do some tests and
didn't see any ill affects from turning the service off.
Question, from googling around, this service is an apparent mystery, no
one seems to know what it actually does, I'm interested in a definitive
explanation, if anyone has one? One site says the emailed nVidia for an
explanation but were ignored.

Just set it to manual in Administritive Tools - Services instead of
Automatic. This way if it is ever needed it will turn on anyway. I've always
set mine to manual and it never has actually been called by anything and
never runs! I was told it is only there to assist Windows when installing
new drivers for the card...
