| I'm looking at Tom's Hardware 2007 VGA charts and it's saying that a
8800GTS, 500MHz, 1600MHz 320 MB GDDR3 card gives a higher frame rate than a
8800GTS, 500MHz, 1600MHz 640 MB GDDR3. This seems strange to me... shouldn't
the 640 MHz card give a higher frame rate?

Once you have enough system/video memory to accomplish the task at hand,
any more is wasted. Even counter-productive depending on how memory
management is executed. >> Stay informed about: quick 8800 question |

the 640... I would thingk that it would be faster than the 320, but

As a guess I'd say that the increased ram causes the card ram timings
to be a shade lower. The 640 runs at the same MHZ but has slightly
higher latency.

I asked this question because you yourself copy-pasted the 'MB' (MegaByte)
in your original posting.
So they have different amounts of memory. The reason why the one with the
bigger amount of memory is at most equal, or slower than the one with the
lower amount of memory has been hinted at already.
The only time when the 640MB version could be faster is when the 320MB
version would run out of texture memory (and the 640MB would not).
Both are, apparently, fine cards for gaming.

Patrick. >> Stay informed about: quick 8800 question |

It's not '640 MHz' but '640 MB'. Not the speed, but the amount of memory is
different. And more memory doesn't necessarily make a card faster...

LOL I didn't even notice my typo... even when you pointed it out the first
time. I was indeed referring to the memory.. or at least that was my
intention. >> Stay informed about: quick 8800 question |
