I have a Radeon 8500DV card, and have always wondered about something
that looks like dot crawl. I have finally figured out what it
is---heat trouble. The Radeon 8500DV board cannot cool itself
sufficiently. That is, even if I open up the case to operate with
good airflow, and I know that the processor is reasonably far away and
not transfering much or any heat to the graphics board, the graphics
board and its components (compensators, etc.) become very hot and then
start creating dot crawls.
this may not be a problem if one of your case fans blows over the
radeon board itself, but my antec case does not do so. probably poor
ATI engineering. I can understand that a graphics board might not
have to take the heat from other components, but it should be able to
stand its own heat---the whole board, not just the graphics
processor---even if there is no case fan blowing directly over it.
after all, a fan blowing over the card is *not* a computer case
requirement afaik.
