I have decided to try a RAID on my PC but I'm not too sure which one I need.
I will be using two different harddrives [Seagate 40 and 20GB]. is it raid
0 or 1.

Actually, since your disks are different capacities, you'd be better off
not using RAID. RAID 0 "stripes" the data equally across both disks.
Normally it doubles your available space (and may slightly increase disk
speed), but because your smaller disk is only 20GB, you'd end up with
40GB available disk space. RAID 1 "mirrors" the data from one drive to
the other for redundancy/failover purposes. Again, you're limited to
the space available on the smaller disk. And because the data is
duplicated, your effective disk space would only be 20GB. If you want
to go RAID, buy two identical, much larger disks.

If I were you, I'd skip the RAID and use the 20GB for your OS and
applications, with the 40GB for data. Then again, at those capacities,
your disks are probably pretty old. I'd invest in some good backup....

Regards,

Margaret

I would suggest doing this just to experiment, especially if you have
the hardware on hand. You might discover something new and useful
beyond the theoretical. If you hardware supports JOBD, you could wind
up with a useful 60 G of space.

i added the drives to IDE 3 and then when the PC restarted i enabled the
RAID controller in the BIOS and added the driver when XP asked for it and
now i seem to have 5 drives. Theres the 160GB boot, 250GB Data, 40GB data
(ex windows drive), 20GB data and another 7GB that i cant explain where it
came from?
So i'm not sure about JBOD or whatever but without using the RAID setup
program i have all the drives active.

Cheers everyone.

This reads like you still need to enable drives for RAID and add to the
RAID. You should have a windows application that came with the RAID
hardware that will allow you to manage the RAID. Also, any drive you
wish to RAID will need to be enable for RAID in BIOS.

JBOD is the acronym for Just a Bunch Of Drives, a RAID mode where
multiple drives are aggregated into one large virtual drive. Useful if
you need a few Tera-bytes of continuous storage and don't want to spring
for such a monster.
