To Whom It May (Or Not) Concern;
Just now, my browser and I wandered over to the Abit website, in
search of an upgraded BIOS for my IC7-G. However, I being a Slackware
user, was taken aback at the lack of any noticable support of
linux-based flashing. This includes downloading the necessary files in a
readable and usable format and providing the necessary software to
actually flash the ROM, without having to have 'that other OS' installed
- just to make a boot floppy!?!? This seems like a massive oversight on
the part of Abit. I want to express my disappointment in their service -
despite their products' exemplary performance 'in the line of duty'.
This point will be one which may affect this (previously loyal)
customer's decision in future purchases. Thank you.

Brandon,
I can see your point, but that hardly qualifies as a rant.
Come on now. A "rant" has to have feeling. A "rant" has to have passion. If
you can't come up with a little more spark, you'll be downgraded to "mild
outburst".
You wouldn't want to disappoint the many readers of this group with false
advertising.
If the future lets only put 'rant" in the subject line if its really gonna
be a "rant".
Thank You for reading this "mild outburst."

Blah... another Linux Jihad Warrior speaking...
You forgot to take cheap shots and blame it all on Bill Gates...
Slackware? Your choice. The producer doesn't wanna spend a lot of money in
development for the three of you that use it, that's his right. Get used to
it, pal; 'cause it's not gonna change anytime soon...

So who needs Windows installed to flash a BIOS? There's a very compact
(i.e. fits on a floppy) operating system called DOS you may be unaware of.
Just download the appropriate software, straight to a floppy or other disk
if you don't want it on your precious system, create an appropriate disc on
someone's Windows PC and boot to and use that. Doesn't matter what OS you
have installed. You don't go that far, anyway.
I wouldn't knock Linux, myself, and I'm not going to enter into arguments
about whether there's enough of a usage base to warrant developing
appropriate apps, but for flashing, I don't really see the need.
Ah! you don't have friends, let alone ones with Windows PCs? Big problem.
Let us know how you sort it. Not.

You don't even need to do that. Both my Abit and Asus mb's contain a
flash utility built into the bios. You put the bin file on to a floppy
disk, reboot and press the correct key combo to start the bios flash
utility and flash from the bin file on the floppy. I would expect his
Abit mb has the same utility. Dumbass Linux user.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ --> >> Stay informed about: <rant>Lack of Linux Support</rant> |

not all the Abit boards came with this utility built into the bios. this
has been a relatively recent development with the Abit boards in the last 12
to 15 or so months.

Simple solution - two words: Drop out.
You'd be amazed at the time you'll find to waste .... 'er... spend on the
