I am planning to replace my current motherboard, a A8N-SLI Deluxe (AMD cpu),
with a Asus P5B Deluxe (Core 2 duo). I don't really want to re-install all
my applications or windows. How successful do you think doing a repair
reinstall of windows xp will be? Anyone ever done this with this particular
combination of hardware? Any advice appreciated.

Its been a while, double check this on the web.
Lots of websites give instructions on this.

You boot off your Windows XP disk.
DO NOT FORMAT
When it asks you if you want to install Win XP or do recovery, do Win
install
It will then ask if you want to do a repair install, click on that.
It will then reload your core Windows installation, without deleting your
programs or data.
Then you will need to do all the windows updates.

Not with this specific hw, but I've done many repair installations of win
after replacing mobo's + cpu's without any problems

You're definitely correct to plan on the repair-install option.
There's a definitive guide on Michael Steven's Web site that you
should read carefully.
http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htm

Repair installs work almost every time. Advice to reformat and clean
install without trying a repair install first is rampant and found all
over the Internet. It's just uninformed and foolish. One has
absolutely nothing to lose by trying the repair install first. This
choice can save days to weeks of effort reinstalling hundreds of
applications and utilities, most of which require rebooting before
going on with other installations.

Just be sure that everything is **BACKED UP** before embarking on ANY
reinstallation option.

The only time it did not work for me was when I switched from an Intel-
based mobo to an AMD-based mobo (P4C800E-Deluxe to A8N32-SLI Deluxe).
Blue screens galore on the first reboot after the repair install. Guess
it was too traumatic a change for WinXP to deal with.
