Archived from groups: alt>comp>periphs>mainboard>gigabyte (more info?)

Where can I purchase a replacement chip set fan for a Gigabyte GA7DX
motherboard? While I was replacing a hard drive I noticed that the fan
stopped moving right after I vacuumed dust out of the system.

It's markings are as follow:
AVC Model D4010S12H fan 12V DC 0.10A

It's specifications are:
Size: 40x40x10mm
Current amps: 0.10
Input power watts: 0.20
Speed rpm: 6000
Airflow CFM: 6.85
Static Pressure : 0.095
Noise dB(A): 29
Weight grams: 15
2 pin female berg connector

I found these specs on a Japanese web site. The fan was always observed to
be moving very slowly which I had assumed was normal. Without the fan the
temperature of it's heat sink will rise to 98F with the case cover removed.

I suspect that the fans requirement is borderline in a system with auxiliary
cooling fans. I wish to replace it however.

Cheers,
Mike H.

You may wish so but i would not do it. If you´re all set Tiger is producing
a fan that fits on nicely and is as useless as the original one...i´m
running the same board since 1,5 years with no fan, before i tried the Tiger
which is as noisy as the gigabyte

Mike,

This is a little late but....

Never ever use a vacuum cleaner near electronic stuff!!!!!!!!
Vacuum cleaners spit static electricity even when they suck.

Unless of course it is purpose designed and has earthing connectors and all
that.
Outside the case with covers on is ok.

This is useful advice. Thanks you. What about vacuum cleaners that are made
for cleaning PCs?

Thanks for the sources. Are the screw sizes standardized?

Screws are normally supplied. If not, a trip to the local hardware store may
be in order.

The issue is weather the screws will fit the heatsink already on the
motherboard.

There are mini vacuum cleaners available from electronics shops that give
one the impression that they *may* be suitable, but I doubt if they have
enough umpf so have never bothered looking closely at them.

Most people use cans of compressed air that are made specifically for the
purpose - again from electronics shops.
Others use paintbrushes - engineers are often seen using paintbrushes with
bristels made from copper wire.
I have used ordinary horse hair brushes in the past (in desparation). I
brush it over the metal case then the part, then the case...

Either that or I blow hard and try not to spit!

I use both. The small vacuum cleaners don't have a lot of power, but seem to
work reasonably well and are not strong enough to suck off a snug fitting
connector. When the dust is thick I prefer not to just blow it on to my tech
bench or into the air. The cans of tetrafluroethane etc. are good for the
tight spaces.

Cheers,
Mike H.
