Post subject: Why can't i run my xp 2800 at the correct speed???? Help!!!!

I have a non Barton Xp2800, running on a AsRock K7V88 MoBo, with 1024 MB Samsung Pc3200 ram, GeForce 4200ti 8x AGP graphics card.

My computer refuses to run at is correct speed of 2250 mhz (13.5 x 166) and crashes as soon as windows starts to boot up. The highest i can run it at stabily at is (13.5 x 150). My first thoughts were that heat was preventing it running but i have installed a Copper Lite heatsink and fan from Arctic Cooling which supports up to Xp3200, so i thought it would cope great with a Xp2800. I have 2 case fans, one extracting and one circulating the air. The case temp is about 24-27 degrees. The CPU monitor in the Bios shows about 40 degrees idle.

Any suggestions??????

Did you increase vcore a little? Try 1.70v. Is this really a 2800+ XP
Tbred? Don't use Windows to test it. Get a memtest boot diskette or cd. Is
the ram running a default timings or did you change them? that new cooler
is only marginally better than the original, and it may not cool enough
under load with a raised vcore. If you can exchange it, go for a TR2-M1 or
-M3. I assume you have at least a 300W PSU.

is this a brand new build? what does the vcore, 3.3, 5 & 12v rails read in the bios?

is your 2800 the 1.65 or the low voltage 1.5 version?

have you tried setting the memory to spd?

I have tried raising the Vcore 5% and my power supply is 500W, so should be no problem at all. I have not tinkered with anything else in the Bios as although i am capable of putting a system together, my knowledge is not that great. I would flash the Bios and put the latest version on, but chances are i'd screw that up and waste my motherboard!

maybe you should be using the 12.5 multiplier. there aren't many with the 13.5 in circulation.

Thoroughbred B
AXDA2200DUV3C 1.8Ghz Multiplier=13.5x
AXDA2400DKV3C 2.0Ghz Multiplier=15x
AXDA2600DKV3C 2.13Ghz Multiplier=16x
AXDA2600DKV3D 333FSB 2.08Ghz Multiplier=12.5x
AXDA2700DKV3D 333FSB 2.17Ghz Multiplier=13x

AXDA2800DKV3D 333FSB 2.25Ghz Multiplier=13.5x

Tbred B Example:
AXD A 2100 D U T 3 C
AXD = AMD Athlon™ XP Processor Model 8
A = Desktop Processor
2100 = Model Number (Athlon XP 2100+ Tbred B)
D = Package Type: OPGA(Organic Pin Grid Array)
U = Operating Voltage: 1.60V(L=1.50V K=1.65V)
T = Die Temperature: 90º Celsius(V=85º Celsius)
3 = Size of L2 Cache: 256KBytes(4=512KBytes)
C = Max FSB: 266MHz(D=333MHz)

--Barton

AXDA2500DKV4D 333FSB 1.83Ghz Multiplier=11x
AXDL2500DLV4D 333FSB Low Power
AXDA2600DKV4D 333FSB 1.91Ghz Multiplier=11.5x

AXDA2800DKV4D 333FSB 2.08Ghz Multiplier=12.5x
AXDL2800DLV4D 333FSB Low Power

AXDA3000DKV4D 333FSB 2.17Ghz Multiplier=13x
AXDA3000DKV4E 400 FSB 2.1Ghz Multiplier=10.5x
AXDA3200DKV4E 400 FSB 2.2Ghz Multiplier=11x

Athlon XP(Barton) Example:
AXD A 3200 D K V 4 E
AXD = AMD Athlon™ XP Processor Model 10
A = Desktop Processor
3200 = Model Number (Athlon XP 3200+ Barton)
D = Package Type: OPGA(Organic Pin Grid Array)
K = Operating Voltage: 1.65V(L=1.50V, U=1.60V)
V = Die Temperature: 85º Celsius(T=90º Celsius)
4 = Size of L2 Cache: 512KBytes(3=256Kbytes)
E = Max FSB: 400MHz(C=266MHz, D=333MHz)

here is the link to test memory that was referred to above.

With a 12.5 multiplier and fsb at 166 my Cpu shows up as a Xp2600, surely these processers are designed to work with these motherboards and should not have too many problems. At the moment i have got it recognising the chip as a Xp2700 running at a slower 13 x 166. It would'nt bother me normally, its just you expect something you pay good money for to work with not too many probs. Heat can't be it surley?? I mean how many fans can you have at any one time!!!!! I can't spend any more money on this thing. Without deviating from the subject anyone recommend a cheap upgrade from a GeForce 4200Ti ???

download this program and run it.

it will show multipliers, fsb, mem timings and cache. click on the cache tab and tell us what it says. if it says 256 then you have the xp2800 tbred version with the 13.5 multi. if it says 512 you have the xp2800 barton version with the 12.5 multi.

download this program and run it's 1m test. it should take your processor about 1 minute to calculate. i think we can have you running a better time later on, if you are willing to work with us.

It is definatley NOT a Barton, its L2 cache is 256. The 1M test took exactly 1min 05 Sec. The answer may be cooling but even running at full Xp2800 (2250 mhz) speed with the side of the case off with a desk fan blowing into the case it still cuts out after only seconds.

i don't have much hope that upgrading the bios would help. that is a rare cpu so i don't think it would be included in a newer bios.

let's try this. run that superpi speed test with your present settings. that way we have something to compare to. then set your multiplier to 11, clear bios, fire the rig up and enter bios. set your cpu and mem to run 1:1 at 200fsb. it should boot without a problem as long as you leave the vcore at the 5% boost you have now. run super pi again. you should be in the low 50sec range.

if everything goes well then shut 'er down again and change the jumper to 11.5, clear cmos and set up as before. keep your finger crossed and run pi again if you make it to windows.

good luck!

Nope, won't let me run the CPU at 200mhz, even tried dropping it to 10 x 200. Just blue screens and re-starts.

if your trying to depress me, quit!

download the memory 86 and run it.

it runs in dos and checks memory errors.

SORRY BUT MEM TEST SAYS EVERYTHING IS FINE.

I THINK MY CPU IS BAD. I HAVE TRIED ONCE MORE TO RUN IT AT 13.5 X 166 AND IT BOOTS UP WINDOWS THEN AS SOON AS IT IS ASKED TO DO ANYTHING AT ALL IT RESTARTS.

THINK I'LL JUST KEEP RUNNING IT AS A XP 2700.

UNLESS EINSTEIN COMES ALONG WITH A SOLUTION DON'T THINK IT WILL GET FIXED. THANKS FOR ALL YOUR HELP GUYS.
