1-Is there really a big noticeable difference in system performance?
2-does a MB mounted SATA interface offer better performance than a PCI-SATA
card?

Only if the HDs themselves are different. Typical 7200 RPM HDs that only have
their interface changed to SATA will show no better performance. However, the
use of RAID can boost performance, and IDE RAID is not common on current
motherboards.

It can, especially if the PCI bus is only 32-bit (133 Mbps). On a 64-bit PCI
bus (less common in home-grade machines), performance should be the same.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

No, but some SATA drives are faster due to the drive rather
than the interface, like a WD Raptor.

Yes, providing the motherboard interface is through the
southbridge rather than a separate chip, that chip also
