Neil,

In my opinion everything you need to assemble the 41G2 Shuttle is in the box
and adequately documented. In your post you mention sufficient information
to assemble and load the operating system. The 41G2 does not include a
processor or a hard drive or ram. You need to get your own an put them in.

Following are some steps that are very important that they be done and done
properly.

1) Install the grease on the processor as suggested in the documentation.
2) Install the supplied heatsink after stripping the clear blue protector
off of it.
3) Don't forget to tighten the four screws thru the cooling unit into the
motherboard.
4) Make absolutely sure that all fans are connected and working.

Many on this group will claim that you need to get brand named matched
sticks of DDR ram from someone such as Crucial or Corsair. Though I've never
bought from those companies it's probably a good idea to get the good
quality ram. In some cases the good matched sticks costs little or no more
than the generic sticks that you buy from anywhere. A substantial number of
problems that people on this group have had has been traced back to cheap
generic ram.

From this point on as long as you know the fundamentals of installing
components you should be O.K. Under most circumstances depending on which
combination of processor and ram you use you will need to make some
adjustments in the Bios. Though the documenation on the assembly of the
unit is adequate the documentation related to settings in the Bios doesn't
explain much. The settings in the Bios related to FSB may not necessarily
default to the best setting. Others find tweaks to memory settings to be
necessary. This group is a good resource if you need help on those
adjustments. Letting the group know the processor size and ram speed that
you use will often give someone fom this group what they need to make
suggestions on settings.

I've built numerous 41G2's. Though some on this group will disagree I
believe everything you need is in the box. On all the one's I've recently
built I put in the 2800+ or greater processors. I've never needed to add
additional or different fans as some suggest. I've never had any issues with
cooling or noise. If any of the above steps are not completed properly you
may have cooling and or noise problems.

Good luck!!!!

As far as I'm aware, all the Shuttle barebones systems come with a very good
instruction guide with colour photos.
