I plan to build a new PC. As I already have two 80GB ATA HDDs, I am
just wondering if it is possible to setup RAID 5 using these old ATA
HDDs with a new SATA one? Buying all three new SATAs would be too
expensive and I don't know what to do with two old ATAs.

Thank you,
Tran

Well I just got the answer from sysopt.com

BipolarBill:
No - RAID requires *one* controller for all drives and there are no
mixed PATA/SATA RAID controllers.[/QUOTE]

Sterling_Aug:

Also, RAID5 requires all drives to be the same size, or it will only
use the size of the smallest drive on the other two, thus wasting
space on two of the larger drives.

IE: #1 = 80GB, #2 = 80 GB, #3 = 250 GB

The RAID5 array would be 160GB total, wasting 250GB of storage space.

That's not really true. Essentially all ATA/SATA RAID setups on desktop
boards are software RAID anyway. I think that the Intel and NVIDIA RAID
setups allow you to mix SATA and PATA drives.

For a real hardware RAID controller (3ware, etc.) then yes, all the
drives would need to be on the same controller.

This is true, yes.

Thanks Robert Hancock,

Assuming that I'll get an ASUS P5W DH Deluxe MB (http://vn.asus.com/
products.aspx?l1=3&l2=11&l3=248&model=1198&modelmenu=2). Under Raid
section of its specification, it say that:

Intel ICH7R South Bridge:
* 1 x UltraDMA 100/66/33
* 3 x Serial ATA 3.0Gb/s with Intel® Matrix Storage Technology with
RAID 0, 1, 5 support
Jmicron JMB363 controller
* 1 x UltraDMA 133/100/66
* 1x Serial SATA 3.0Gb/s
* 1x External Serial ATA 3.0Gb/s (ASUS SATA-on-the-Go)
* Support SATA RAID 0, 1 and JBOD (by 1x External SATA & 1x Internal
SATA)
Silicon Image 4723 Hardware RAID controller (ASUS EZ-Backup)
* 2 x Serial ATA 3.0Gb/s with RAID 0, 1 support
* Support RAID 10 cross Intel® ICH7R and Silicon Image 4723
controller

Does it mean this board has a RAID controller? My understand is that
RAID function of this board only support SATA. I never use RAID
before.

Thank you,
Truc

Go to INTEL's website, then search for the specs on the ICH7R chipset.
