I've just bought a DVD writer but am stuck now for where to put it; my
system is setup thus:-
primary master : 160GB Maxtor HDD
primary slave : 40GB Seagate HDD
secondary master: DVD Liteon DVD-ROM
secondary slave : 40x CDRW.
there are further IDE connectors for a RAID setup. Could I use these for
one or more HDDs and allow me to have the DVD writer added without having to
move any of the drives. if I cant which would be best to remove the cdrw or
DVD-rom.

You give no specifics of your motherboard or your RAID controller.

Why would you need that third drive? It is just another thing to slow down
Windows Explorer as it tries to read the contents of one more CD or DVD.

Since your DVD burner should also function as a CD burner, just replace the
CDRW. This will also let you copy files from one DVD to another without
having to use the hard disk.

If you really need the third drive, the RAID IDE channels will probably work
with any of your drives, just make sure that the fastest transfer mode of
the drive (such as ATA-133 or UDMA 2) is supported by the controller. I
don't see what you could hurt by trying it. If you put your boot drive on
the RAID controller, you will probably have to change the BIOS boot
sequence.

What EPoX board do you have? Generally the IDE RAID controller only support
hard drives attached.
