Can you suggest program to play AVI files?

I have a bunch of .avi files on a CD. These are little home movies that we
took with our digital camera.

Is there any software that will do the following:

When I put the CD in the drive I would like it to automatically start
playing the .avi files.

There are about 15 such files on the CD

You don't say what operating system you are using.
If you are using Windows XP then the included Windows Media Player will
play AVI files.
