Post subject: new system and want to avoid Norton Systemworks
Archived from groups: alt>comp>hardware>homebuilt (more info?)

I used to use Norton AV and Norton SystemWorks but I know
that System Works has become less and less respected in
recent years and I'm considering not putting it on my new
machine.

I do want three things and am willing to get separate
programs if that would create the best quality function:

  Unerase
  Good Defragger
  Registry Cleaner

What programs would people recommend for these three
functions?

TIA

Norton SystemWorks does contain good tools. However, installing and running
the whole suite uses up a great deal of system resources. Read "bloatware".
If you are using Windows XP, you do not need a registry cleaner. The GUI
based defrag utility is found under Accessories|System Tools|Disk
Defragmenter| It's a light version of Diskeeper.

You can d/l a trial of ESI's Undelete here:

I've been using Executive Software Diskeeper on my home PCs and server and
been delighted with the results, I tend to let it do it's own thing ("set it
and forget it" option) on my server, with a boot-time defrag every few weeks
on the desktops.

Their Undelete, as mentioned above, is also a competent tool though nothing
beats making sure you don't delete the wrong files in the first place.

Registry cleaning is really only worthwhile if you're regularly installing
and uninstalling software and there are a number of free tools out there to
do it for you (see Google).<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

Defragger and registry cleaner are two different kinds of animals.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->
