Post subject: How are my temps?
Archived from groups: alt>comp>hardware (more info?)

Just built a new system, last one I built was a P2 so it's been a
while!

ASUS P5LD2 Deluxe MB
P4 3Ghz 530j Prescott
Antec P180 case

My temps are 66/41 (CPU/MB) with a 100% load for 20mins. 48/38 idle in
WinXP 5mins after 100% load.

Does this sound reasonable to everyone? From what I gather the
Prescotts are able to heat up to ~71c before they throttle down.

TIA.

66c CPU, 41c Motherboard with CPU at 100% utilization. 48c CPU, 38c
Motherboard on idle. Room temp is around 24c. I am using the included
PC Probe II that came with the P5LD2 motherboard.

What do you mean with 66/41 or 48/38? What was the room temp? How did you
measure (program)?

thats too hot - you need better case ventilation I would guess.
CPU temps in the 40s is good - in the 50s is okay but 60+
- do something about it.

Your reported temps look normal for a 3GHz Prescott with the
retail heatsink. There is no reason to change anything
based on those temps _alone_.

However, it would be good to test stablity with Prime95's
Torture Test for at least an hour.

Kony, Thats what I thought, but the other posts raise concern for me.
This is a Prescott, which runs at higher temps than normal. I think I
will contact Intel to see what they have to say.

They will tell you not to exceed 67C.

You need a much better heat sink. If you want one that will absolutely
do the job, then that Zalman 7700 is the one to get.

They pointed me to the spec sheet which says 67.7c max, so you were
almost right Smile

I picked up a Zalman 7700cu. I'll post my results after I install it
tonight. Thanks.

Keep in mind that Asus boards often report temp a few
degrees higher than actual. There really wasn't any
pressing need to do anything to the CPU if it was stable....
BUT a better 'sink may help reduce noise which is desirable
in itself.

That's no excuse to ignore the fact that the CPU was too hot.

I don't like running electronics at or above their max temp rating,
stable or otherwise.

The desirable thing is that the CPU will run much cooler, extending
its longevity considerably.

So you keep claiming, but without proof.
It WAS under the threshold temp. If the Asus board reports
the temp high, then it's even further below the threshold
temp.

It is not a contest to cool a CPU. Lowest number does not
win the grand prize nor even a consolation prize. While the
reported temp is borderline, meaning if any hotter it would
be more of a concern, as-is that is a quite common temp for
full load on an OEM box with a 3GHz Prescott CPU. Go argue
with the OEMs, plenty of systems run like that stable.

More important are parts that have shorter initial
lifespans, whose lifespans are further reduced by elevated
temps. This means that while the CPU temp alone may not be
a problem in itself, the contributory factors may be causing
similar temp rise in parts like video card, motherboard
capacitors, power supply, or even hard drives in extreme
ambient conditions (or due to general lack of case intake).

That's not the "max", it's the "stable" rating. Max per
damage is significantly higher than 70C. Remember that this
is a full load temp we're considering, it can't be compared
to idle.

Relatively unimportant. At that temp the CPU should be
among the last parts to fail. What good is a working CPU 10
years from now after the motherboard, power, and hard drives
have failed?

Bob, I must agree with you on this - that the Zalman kicks ass. I
disabled a fan on the top of my case, leaving one running in the back
to really test this thing. I went from idle 48/39 to 40/35. From full
load (Super Pi loaded twice to get 100% utilization) 66/41 to 56/38!
10c less on the CPU! I also installed the V700 video heatsink to quite
down my stock heatsink on the xfx video card.

Thanks for the recomendation.

The XFX 6600 GT has a thermal page in the display properties that shows
the current temp.
