Post subject: Trying to test a motherboard

Hi, I'm trying to test a motherboard simply on power up, can anyone
tell me if i'm going about it the right way?
I connect up the ATX PSU to the mb socket, (have connected the CPU +
fan and 1 SDRAM stick), and momentarily short the PWR SW terminals
together.
What happens is the fan starts to spin then stops. And thats it. If
i try to short PWR SW again the fan doesn't even try. If i remove the
mains lead from the PSU for some seconds before replacing it and then
repeat the short the fan tries to spin again but stops again.
The mb is an ECS K7S5A.

it seems the board isn't picking up the rpm sensor on the heat sink fan. does it have the yellow wire? do you have another fan with a rpm sensor wire? heatsink installed properly with thermal compound?

I think you need a video card too. If you had a cheap case speaker you could
hear the error beep codes. Be sure to clear the CMOS battery as this often
fixes boot failure. The starting and quitting sounds like the CPU fan may
not be sensed as spinning resulting in shutdown.

Put some memory in the board and a vid card.

I assume you have it OUT of the case, well insulated with no chance
of a short. If not, take it out and test it out of the case first.

Hi all, thanks for the suggestions. I put a memory stick in, and a vid
card but same results. I put a cmos battery in but dont know if the
battery is dead or not. I thought it would power up without one
though, does it need a cmos batt in then? I'll get one that i know
works and try.

And yes, i've been testing this out of the case anyway, making sure
nothing is touching.
What can i do about knowing if it is indeed not sensing the fan is
spinning? cos funnily enough, when i tried the cpu in another pc,
although it booted up fine, when i checked the fan speed in the bios
settings it read 0. But i could see the fan was indeed spinning
fast.
