according to what I have read, the first generation Prescott's are supposed
to be supported by the IC7. of course, once the pin format changes from
478, all bets are off...

@ i dont know.
What do you think about this?
I have 1 ordered from buy.com for $315 and I am hoping to get close to
4.0ghz
Do you know what the default volts will ne on these?

I have not looked into the Prescott at all. I can't even tell you what kind
of OC you can get and everywhere I look, everyone is still saying the 2.6c
is the best bang for the buck...

You won't without putting it in a freezer.

I wouldn't. If I were you I'd cancel the order, for the time being at least.
Better to let someone else be the guinea pig.

Default voltage will vary slightly from chip to chip - multiple VID. TBH
it's too early to tell how the performance compares with Northwood at the
same clock speed, and indeed how overclockable the early Prescotts are. By
the sound of things Intel have recently changed the stepping mask slightly
to improve performance. That alone would be reason to wait a couple of
months to make certain you get one of the newer CPU's.

Update: I have been given a Prescott sample. Won't go into the whys and hows
of how I got it, but suffice to say that experience with it reinforces the
suggestion above that it might be better to wait.

Unfortunately I don't profess to know whether the chip I've got uses the
latest stepping mask, but can confirm that it runs in an Abit IC7-G without
problem. The biggest issues are not only that it appears to be slower than a
Northwood P4 at the same clock speed, but also that it runs a *lot* hotter
than the Northwood, which, if my CPU is representative of the design as a
whole, would make the original poster's intention to overclock up toward the
4GHz range extremely difficult to achieve.

Your experience is reinforced by the opinion of the webmaster who wrote this
article: http://www.overclockers.com/articles940/

It's beginning to look like Intel made some serious design compromises at
the last minute to get Prescott out the door.

Is it running hotter and slower because the core voltage cannot go
low enough on the motherboard and the Prescott is in "protection
slow-down" ?? The early information that I had on Presott warned of
voltage incompatibilities with the current 478-pin MBs. Some
hints that the core voltage bus might be split between two groups of
existing pins with one group running around 1.0volts.

Do you happen to have reviewed the full spec/pin-out as well as
tried out the part itself ?
