I have a 6 or 9 month old PC based on socket 754 and Semprom 2800 with
a good overclocking motherboard.

When would be the best time to upgrade the chip to a faster one? I.e.
in a year is it likely I could buy a Sempron 4500 for 40 quid? Or will
they stop production on it?

Currently my PC is fast enough but I will probably keep it long after
754 has been discontinued.

It is clocked to 2150 ghz FSB = 270 - do the faster chips o/c as well
as this 2800?

Socket 754 is already End Of Life.

Your processor is already OCed higher than the stock speed of any Sempron
made, a 34% increase from stock.

A new CPU would not increase your odds of a higher OC.

Depending on your hardware you might be able to push it a little further.

Socket 754 will likely not see any faster cpus. It will be replaced by AM2.

best time to upgrade is when you find the CPU you want at the right price.
Best CPU would be a venice core (E6) Athlon 64. They will overclock good
while the earlier ones won't. Newegg has this cpu ADA3000AIK4BX for $56
shipped right now and would probably be the best choice. With a 10x
multiplier you can get it about as high as you want and twice the cache of
the Sempron. Or the Sempron 3400+ with a 10x multiplier would also be a
decent choice. it's going for about $45 now. I don't think more time will
make any noticable difference in price unless it goes up.
