What's the contrast figure I read ie 300 is this good ? Any other info much
appreciated ?

300:1 or better should be considered pretty good. You should
understand that higher contrast numbers than this are starting to
get into the "irrelevant data" range; you've generally only got
8 bits/color worth of dynamic range anyway (256:1), and the
human eye doesn't have a much broader dynamic range
capability than that under typical viewing conditions anyway. Also,
these are "dark room" measurements - they are based solely on
the light emitted by the "white" areas of the image vs. the light
emitted by the "black" areas, completely ignoring the possibility
of reflected ambient light. In real-world viewing, reflected ambients
are almost always the actual limiter of as-viewed contrast, and the
actual DELIVERED contrast ratio under such conditions is rarely
much better than 100:1 or so.

There are other factors besides the straight black/white contrast
ratio, as typically measured, that result in different appearances
between displays. These are often mistakenly attributed to a greater
CR number.
