Post subject: unable to download pics from camera
Archived from groups: alt>comp>periphs>dcameras (more info?)

Hi all,
I have been using a Kodak dx600 for 8 mths with no problem on win 2000pro
using Kodak software
Suddenly I am unable to transfer any pics. When I connect the camera, a
message comes up saying retrieving device contents.
But nothing further happens
The icon shows on the task bar, and when I do connect by right
clicking/transfer now, it tells me there are no pictures on the camera.
The camera works fine on my sons pc, he is using win xp pro, and I have
been transferring the pictures through our network.
I have uninstalled /reinstalled the 3 items of software that I have been
using but it makes no difference.
Any ideas anyone?
sorry for waffling on

Nothing beats a camera card reader.

Saves wear and tear on the camera, batteries, nerves, etc.

$20 or less.
I like Dazzle from radioshack or a store near you.

One thing I keep noticing in photo newsgroups is the large amount of posts
to do with Kodak and problems with their software. As you need their
software to download your pictures from their cameras and they don't seem to
support access via twain then your best bet is to get a card reader as Geo
h advised and then forget about their software and all the headaches that go
with it.

Hi Grylion,

Sorry to hear about your situation. I guess I would want to learn a little
more about what happened and when the software stopped working? It usually
happens only when something else occurs. Did you add software or remove
software? Did you change your network settings? Did you update any
software? More than likely there is something happening in one of those
scenarios.

I will look for your information.

Greetings Canopus,

I can appreciate your concern, but there are several options that you can
use to get pictures from Kodak cameras.

Of course, as you noted, you can use a card reader which will remedy things
easily.

If that is not to your liking, for one, you can USB if your system is
Plug-n-Play compatible, which means that once the camera is connected to
your computer, turned on, and in Connect mode, WIA software should start. If
you close WIA software while the camera is connected, you can restart the
software by double-clicking the camera icon in
the My Computer window.

1. Use the Kodak-provided USB cable to connect the camera to your computer
and then turn on the camera.
2. Turn the Mode dial to Connect. Windows ME automatically detects the
camera.
NOTE: You may be asked for the Windows ME disc in order to install the
proper driver. Insert the disc in the CD-ROM drive and then browse to the
Win9x folder to locate the requested file. To complete the driver
installation, click OK. When installation is completed, the Scanner and
Camera Wizard appears. To copy files, click Next. To see other features,
click the Explore Camera (Advanced) link.

The technology used with the EasyShare software is very current and, though
twain is not used any longer, it is very efficient and compatible with
current software. If you have software that uses twain, you might want to
simply acquire the images as noted, and open the images accordingly.

If you have additional questions, Canopus, let me know. If I recall I
shared with you before, and I look forward to it again.

Talk to you soon,

Ron Baird

Greetings Kodak,

I'm afraid you seem to be jumping to some odd conclusions possibly due to
not reading the posts correctly. The original poster was having problems
downloading pictures with your software and was correctly advised to use a
card reader to circumvent these problems not just by me, but, also by
another poster, advice that he seemed to appreciate. At no time have I ever
claimed that I have problems with your software merely that I have noticed
that there are often a large amount of posts to newsgroups on the same
subject of problems with your software which again is true. In fact I have
rarely seen any posts expressing problems with software of other makes of
cameras. This is something you should look into.

As far as using your software and all the advice you just gave me, well I'm
afraid I don't use your software as I don't use a Kodak camera and wouldn't
dream of giving trouble shooting advice for your software, merely common
sense advice from what I have observed in newsgroups. As far as your advice
about ME is concerned I'm not quite sure why you think I run ME, however I'm
sure it may be of help to people who do.

Incidentally, as a side issue, I'm not sure how much experience you have
with newsgroups, but, it is netiquet to bottom post replies as most people
do so as to preserve the flow of the discussion.

Regards,

Actually, many of us prefer top posts. It is much quicker to preview
the replies and if we want to read the previous post, we only have to
page down after making that decision on that single message.

And Kodak has sold millions of their cameras due to their very
agressive marketing program selling that very feature. Be careful on
comparing your camera to theirs. Most camera mfgs market their camera
but Kodak is marketing the ease of the sharing of the photos. It is a
whole different ball game and they are winning.

A: Because it messes up the way in which we normally read texts.

I don't believe that I compared my camera to any other or even for that case
mentioned what camera I used. In fact I stay well away from posts asking
advice about whether A is better than B etc. for that very reason. It is
certainly true that Kodak is aggressively marketing their cameras etc.,
again another reason I don't normally comment on Kodak posts Smile However,
recommending a card reader over their software for downloading is a
completely different ball game. I would say the same for any software.

As far as bottom V top posting goes, again it is true that many prefer top
posting, fortunately the many are a very small percentage of newsgroup
posters.

Yep, getting a card reader will be the next thing on my shopping list.
The software that Kodak shipped with my CX4130 camera was out of date.
It didn't work with win2K SP4. Took all night to download the lastest
version (they will gladly sell me the nex disk for $10 or something
like that)

The updated software worked pretty well for awhile...just long enough
for me to think it was easy. but now it's decided not to work
everytime. Something gets tangled up and you have to reboot. Not
everytime. Just say,... if you're in a hurry to do something. THEN
it won't work and then you have to reboot. .. There's nothing quite as
wonderfull as standing or sitting there watching the screen
impatiently with nothing to do as the system reboots to get happy once
again.

Is this Kodak software or windows OS or some program or virus screwing
me up? Who knows. I have no way to tell. But my suspicions tend to
point in Kodak's direciton since their software is the most recent
player on my machine. How is it that everything else rattling around
in my machine seems to feel happy? Other USB devices like the printer
and scanner always work but yet this digital camera USB connection has
turned out to such a tempermental little witch. Eventually, it will
work, if you diddle and fiddle long enough but I'd like to do more
with my life that watch windows reboot.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

Exactly who are you addressing this rude mail to? As far as I can see no
one has rubbished Kodak cameras, just advised that using a card reader
circumvents headaches with their software which is true. You yourself admit
in your mail that you don't use their software and have never installed it.
Are you suggesting that all Kodak users install XP?

Excerpted from Photoshop Elements 2:

Importing photos using a TWAIN device

TWAIN is a cross-platform interface for acquiring images captured by
certain scanners, digital cameras, and frame grabbers. The manufacturer
of the TWAIN device must provide a Source Manager and TWAIN Data Source
for your device to work with Photoshop Elements.

You must install the TWAIN device and its software, and restart your computer
before you can use it to import images into Photoshop Elements. See the
documentation provided by your device manufacturer for installation
information.

My question is where does one find TWAIN drivers (W98SE) for Kodak's cameras?<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->
