Hi all,
I would like to upgrade my sons video card from a Geforce3 TI200.
His system specs are:
Vh6t Abit motherboard
512 pc133 memory
Dual boot 98 and xp home edition
350 power supply
I have googled and searched and still don't know what to get him.
Don't need to suggest a 6200 on up video card, cause eventually he
will get my MSI 6600gt agp card, if and when I decide to upgrade my
machine, he would get my whole setup. Also he is not interested in
framerates.
I would like it to have 9x support, needs to be able to run under both
98 and XP, he likes his dual boot.
Anything out there for him that is better than the TI200, or should I
just get him more ram?
Thank you in advance for any help on this.

Best bang for the buck in a new board would be a Radeon 9600 of some sort.
The XTs aren't substantially cheaper than a 6600, but the regular and pro
you can sometimes find at a decent price.

The different components of the current system may already be well matched.
Any change should take into account the how the system will be used. Some
applications and games just are not workable on a Pentium III class system
no matter what display adapter is used.
The motherboard takes a Pentium III class CPU and has a VIA chipset. It
will be hard to get intelligent suggestions about a new display adapter
without your stating what CPU is installed (Celeron or Pentium III, etc.)
The reasonable choices are probably going to be
#1. buy a very cheap used (and faster) Pentium III CPU
OR
#2. plan on replacing the entire system: a Pentium 4 won't work in the
current motherboard, any memory that will work in the current system will
not be useful for a Pentium 4 system.
A more powerful display adapter will likely be limited by the current
motherboard, CPU, and memory bandwidth.

9600 Pro is a good card. I did the same upgrade for a gefore 3 ti 200
to a 9600 pro. The difference was massive
Though not sure if it will be masive for very long on your system.

it right now.

Right now he is using a Celeron-s 1200, I will have to look at his
manual later as he is home right now, and I don't want him to know I
am trying to find out about this.

If he's happy with his sytem, and you're maybe gonna give him your
hand-me-down system, how about just leave him alone. Or here's an idea ...
maybe take him out for some pool and a coupla beers once in a while

Your son's current (Celeron 1.2 GHz/512 MByte/GeForce3 TI200) system is
perfectly adequate for almost all applications. High power graphics
programs like PhotoShop CS would sufferer, but then that is a $700 USD
program, and has a pretty stiff learning curve. Many recent games that
require 3D acceleration are going to be almost unplayable with a Pentium III
class system. Because the average system power continues to rise, game
publisher continue to come out with games that require more CPU power as
well as more display adapter power. If you want to make your son's computer
suitable for gaming, look on the boxes of games your son might enjoy, and
read the MINIMUM requirements and the RECOMMENDED requirements. Usually,
the RECOMMENDED requirements are barely adequate for enjoyment. For
example, the RECOMMENDED requirements for 'Doom III' include a Pentium 4 2.4
GHz or equivalent and 'Civilization IV' RECOMMENDED requirements include a
Pentium 4 1.7 GHz, 'Diablo II: Lord of Destruction RECOMMENDED requirements
are met by your son's current system. First person shooter games tend to
need the most powerful systems, real time strategy games somewhat less, and
turn based games the least (though 'Civilization IV' needs considerably more
than the RECOMMENDED requirements to be enjoyable.
The short answer: for almost all uses other than games no older than two
years, your son's currnet system is fine. For almost all games less than 2
years old, the entire system would need to be replaced.

No wonder I am having so much trouble finding a card. I guess I will
leave his system alone. It runs just fine for him, as I said he likes
his dual boot, as he still plays games that are older. I will just buy
him something else for xmas.
He won't be getting my P4 system for quite awhile, it does everything
I want it to do. My last upgrade was the 6600GT card.
Thank you so much for your answers, it has helped me quite a bit.

Yup, thats the way it is right now, he gets my leftovers, he can't
afford anything new, so he gets my hand me downs.
I can't give him this one right now (I can't upgrade) because my line
at my job is going to Mexico. When that happens I probably won't even
have a job. He was quite happy when I gave him the GeForce3 TI200.
Just thought that I would try to boost his computer for xmas before I
lose my job.
