I think this is about as good as it gets for under a 100 bucks. Of course
without knowing anything about the rest of your system, it might even be
overkill ...

I have the "Pro" model of this card, which is clocked slightly faster, and
I'm very happy with it. Runs every game I throw at it, including Far Cry
and Painkiller. However I also have a 3 Ghz P4 which certainly helps with
the workload. Be sure to review the system requirements too.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ --> >> Stay informed about: New video card for under $100? |

This performs much much better than the 9600 and its cheaper : )

Really From the specs they're pretty close, actually. The FX5700LE has
slightly better memory bandwidth but the 9600 has a thirty percent better
fill rate. The cost difference is a dollar, btw.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ --> >> Stay informed about: New video card for under $100? |

The LE is a crippled (clock rate is 250MHz vs. 425MHz) version of the 5700
and I doubt it's performance is on par with a 9600. I couldn't find any
reviews comparing the 5700LE to any significant card. The 5700LE would
undoubtedly be an improvement over his MX, but I'm not sure the price vs.
performance ratio is better than a 9600, 9700, or full blown 5700.

I agree with Tim, the 9600 would be a gigantic power boost over the MX440;
but for a few dollars more (~$20) you can get this:
<a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=14-131-" target="_blank">http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=14-131-</a>
201R&depa=99
which is significantly faster than the 9600.

Almost double the fill rate and triple the memory bandwidth - it's faster
alright . Never had a PowerColor though, much less a refurbished one.
Any opinion of the brand? I've heard quite a few negative opinions about
them myself though I don't know how valid they are.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ --> >> Stay informed about: New video card for under $100? |

Hell, I have to say the best price per cost ratio is
<a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://www.newegg.com/app/viewProductDesc.asp?description=14-130-179&depa=1" target="_blank">http://www.newegg.com/app/viewProductDesc.asp?description=14-130-179&depa=1</a>
Its almost double what he was wanting, but this card can play splinter cell
a top resolution with not one lag. Its a great investment.

Great brand (evga), too. But I have to ask, what's the difference between
an se and an xt? Newegg has the xt version for $3 more. -Dave<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ --> >> Stay informed about: New video card for under $100? |

Clock speeds. The SE and the XT are just reduced clock speeds over the
original 5900

That "XT" denotation is a bit deceiving too, as the letters were originally
used by ATI to denote a *faster* version of their products. Actually, both
companies have a confusing product line, but I think NVidia goes the extra
mile to misdirect their customers, especially now the heat is on with ATI.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ --> >> Stay informed about: New video card for under $100? |

What is the consensus on the best 2D video card? I'm not a gamer, so 3D is
an afterthought, and business and 2D graphics performance is important to
me.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ --> >> Stay informed about: New video card for under $100? |

Matrox has long been considered by many, the pinnacle of 2D graphics with
ATI close behind. The Matrox cards don't have very good 3D performance.
Performance wise, almost any PCI or AGP graphic card will deliver
excellent 2D performance.

Matrox cards in general, very reliable drivers and excellent quality 2D
Output.
My children have a variety of ATI and Nvidia Graphics Cards for their PCs
which annoy me with flaws here and there and the drivers which can
sometimes be good sometimes not.
The Matrox Cards for my 3 Work PCs though just work, in one case the G100
for many years now without any problems at all (providing you do not want
to play any modern games)
Hope this helps
