Post subject: Looking for NEW video card,
Archived from groups: comp>sys>ibm>pc>hardware>video (more info?)

Ok, I have just visited S3 Graphics' web site and they confirmed my
suspicion. My video card's driver won't be of any use since if I go to
upgrade the operating system. In fact, I have the latest version of the
Savage 4 driver for my 16MB Diamond Stealth card. Hehe, it is time to
look into a new video card before I am forced to do it. By forced, I
mean - No video - no computer.

This is my current system setup: CPU is an AMD Aflon 1GHz, with 512MB of
RAM. It does have an AGP port and the motherboard is from 2001. The
system has 512MB of SDRAM and is running Windows XP SP1.

My use for the video card lies in Web design, play games like Civ III,
Chessmaster 8000 and Galactic Civ. Yes, I do surf the net, watch my DVD
movies on the system and run the usual business apps. I've also have a
Benq fp767 LCD monitor that hooks up to my current video card's VGA
port. I really don't see a need for a 256MB video card.

What would be a good card for me? Who is a good reputable vendor"

By the way, I use a screen magnifier to see a lot of stuff on the
system; except when playing my few games. Need the card to work great
or enhance ZoomText ability to magnify stuff on the monitor.

Looking forward to seeing what is out there. Yes, I do want good
quality graphi and no, I don't play FPS games.

Go with just about any Matrox board--any modern board will be a step up
in performance from what you have, and Matrox has the most convenient
support for zooming the screen--the ATIs can be made to do it as well
but for some reason they managed to munge up the drivers along the way
so that it's no longer simple to set up--I don't know if the nvidias can
do this easily or not--I've never seen such a feature mentioned in the
docs but I may have missed something.

SNIP!

Wrong newsgroup - this one is for adverts only. I suggest you try
uk.comp.homebuilt or comp.sys.ibm.pc.hardware.video. There have recently
been a number of discussions in uk.comp.homebuilt about the relative merits
of graphics cards. If you want to know about vendors try uk.comp.vendors
