Ain't up on latest and greatest. Going to build one more box with last
Athlon XP 2500.
Old rule of thumb IIRC was nVidia based cards seemed to do better with
AMD processors. Still hold true? Only looking for a 50 dollar card, no
gaming.
Thanks

If you have not bought the motherboard yet then you would be fine by
purchasing a NF2 board with onboard video. But that idea that Nvidia cards
work better with AMD cpus or Nforce chipsets is bogus. I have two Nforce2
systems. One with Nvidia video and one with ATI and the ATI is better.
Clearer text and better 3D. Not saying ATI is better either but my ATI card
is of a later generation. So if you are going to buy a cheap video card, an
ATI 9200 would probably be a better choice than an old Geforce2 just because
it's of a newer generation.

Then a 32MB geforce 2 card would work fine, about $10 on ebay.

IMHO nVidia based cards, nF2 chipset and AMD are the way to go on a
socket A build. Is the XP 2500 unlocked? I intend to flog my two
overclocked XP 2500s until my motherboards disintegrate Smile

If youre not gaming, I would get an ati card. I find the 2d to be
superior. The 3d is a tossup but you said youre not gaming. For $50 you
can get a 9x00 ati or an fx 5x00 nvidia. Just try and get the newest
card with the most memory for your $50. Ebay is a great place for this.
Gamers upgrade all the time and let go nice video cards for a cheap
price on ebay.

I'll 2nd that, I like nvidia for games but ATI does better 2d. I picked up
a 256MB ATI 9250 for $39AR at compusa a couple weeks ago.

Actually, for the best 2D speed and image quality you can't beat a
Matrox G450 or G550.

Thanks guys!

Good to hear your opinions. Will start shopping and see the reviews from
Newegg to help steer me to a choice. It's Windows so whatever gets the best
reviews I'll pick up.

I have been using Matrox G450, 32MB cards for years, still using w/ socket
939 Opteron. Great 2d card and can be had on eBay for 10-20$

A NVIDIA 5200 or ATI 9550 (or 9600)
Should be able to get something used of EBay.

I've had some problems getting a few systems to boot with Matrox G450s. The
cards I was using were of the 16MB oem type. I think maybe they weren't
fully AGP 3.0 compatible.

I've got a test rig running as we speak w/ OC'd Opteron 939 & Matrox G450
16MB. Nice thing about G450's is there are drivers for virtually everything,
even OS2 Warp...you remember, that super stable IBM operating system?

Believe it or not, I work with OS2 Warp every day (except weekends).
