I was going through some boxes yesterday and stumbled on an old Abit
IT-5H motherboard (anyone remember the mighty HX Smile? Just for kicks
I powered it up and it still works great. Runs Win2K surprisingly well
with 96MB ram, 4 PCI/4 ISA slots, 512K cache, deep PCI buffers etc.
Even MS Office loads and runs like a champ.

Am I the only guy who has a real problem throwing away working
hardware, no matter how incredibly old and obsolete it is? For a few
moments I actually considered posting it for sale on eBay, but then the
rational half of my brain took over. But it really was one of the best
boards in its day.

My wife just made me clean up my "spare parts" closet. I managed to get rid
of some stuff, but I couldn't throw my old Voodoo3 3000 AGP. It was the
first video card I ever bought, and if it did hardware T&L, I'd still be
using it today.

I'm still using 2 VooDoo2 3000 PCI's in a couple of spare computers.
Anybody remember the Ultrasound sound cards? The cat's meow in their
day. I still have one of those, made in Canada I believe.

Let's see I still have a Timex-Sinclair 1000, RS TRS-80 Model II with 8"
floppy disks, complete Epson 286 setup in mint condition, 3 Mac SE/30's
& 1 SE Classic, an old Sony computer but I can't remember the model,
quite a few 386 & 486's plus a gajillion parts.... Good thing I have a
lot of storage space. :^)

I just junked my Abit IT-5H because of two problems. First was the IDE
controller did not work properly. I could live with that by using a PCI
card. However, the second pair of memory sockets did not work so I could
not put more than 64mb of memory.

My oldest computer is a dual P133 which runs my NT4 domain controller.

Hardly.

My IT5H is running next to me, since ~1997, 128MB, K6-233, Win2k Server,
running mail and ftp and MP3 file serving. I also have a full house Everex
Cube 486DX-33 (16 inch cube, circa 1990) all scsi, charcoal cabinet,
sliding drive door cover with black drives (stock), souped up with a
486DX2-66, 3 2GB drives and 64MB RAM in 4MB 30-pin SIMMS (imagine the 1990
$$$ of those), dual 100Mb ISA NICs. Not running, but operational, and kept
mostly for its curiousity value. Got me through my NT4 MCSE and probably a
$10K+ machine when new. I think it was PC Magazine's annual Dream Machine
in 1990 or so. Oh, and a second one in the garage for spares...

We just finished a recycling at work and I had my own pallet...

Glen,

Naw, "real men" never throw out old computer equipment (unless it's
totally toast). I think the only things I actually threw out was an old
15" CTX monitor that I blew up replacing a fuse, and a Canon BJ-4000 ink
jet printer that died after almost bankrupting me in ink cartridges
<g>. My trusty NEC 870 laser printer seems to have bit the dust the
other night, so it may join the list...

I still have my Commodore C-64 (with floppy drive and 300 baud modem),
and my first "IBM" clone, a CompuAdd 316-SX. Anyone remember them ?
They built (and supported !) some neat machines...

Dean...

Ah the C64. What a machine! I learned 6502/6510 assembler
on that puppy.

Digging further in my stash I found a TI 99-4A, and a "NEAT"
(New Enhanced AT) 286 on a Vesa Local Bus motherboard.
I wonder how many motherboards have the words "Made in
USA" silkscreened on them nowadays.

Well, I don't throw out the old stuff IF it is working. But I do try to
find new homes for working old systems. However, I've got such a large
collection of working old stuff that nobody wants I'm gonna have to draw the
line and set out some of the oldest stuff. 386/486 stuff. All the I/O
cards for them, the VLB cards. I might put together ONE 486DX4-100 rig
with a local bus vid card. Dunno what to do WITH it though :\

Whenever the wife files the papers. (she's threatened to)
She's also threatened to send my name in to the TV program where they
come in and clean out your house. (they would have to use two shows to
do mine). :^)

Smart young Lady ...

I 'assume' you really =know= your place in life , 'eh ??

Older 8" media was punch "holed", near the inner drive hole
reinforcement ...
.... 1/8" +\- dia ...
9 holes , yielding 8 sectors "twixt" ...
as I recall , I think, maybe.
I had an older DG Mn Mini with a dual 8" flpy rack mount .
The 'case' was big enuf for me to get "in" .

Later designs were 'soft' sectored ... no sector alignment holes ,
as is the nowaday flpy media.
